I want to obtain a legal alias that is completely different from my current name.?

I have my legal name John Spencer, and I wish to obtain the alias of Scott Armstrong.

What are the legel procedures I would have to go through to do this? I have been searching for answers all morning and I have turned up "Just do it".

I am planning on moving out of the state to start a new life. The next step for me is to get a new name, but I still want the option to come home with my old name.

Where do I start and how do I do this?

Unless you are prepared to change your name completely, then any alias you use would have to be just that -- an alias. The problem with using an alternative name is that you would not be able to persuade the authorities to use it, you would not be able to do things like open a bank account with it, and you might even have problems with any qualifications you want to show a prospective employer (as well as explaining to such a person that any references would have to be taken up in the other name). There are people who use an alias in their professional lives (actors and authors, for example), but only by dint of explaining to interested parties (such as the taxman and the bank manager) that Scott Armstrong is really John Spencer.

It is illegal to live under an assumed name.Don't believe me ? Try it.Besides, what are you running away from ? Are you wanted ? Is your name on a no fly list ? Are you banned from getting cable TV ? Do you have outstanding debts ? Is the mother of your 8 children wanting child support ? Whats up ?

You can use your old name or you can use the new name. Either way, you cannot use both. Instead of a name change, it then becomes an illegal name change.
