What breeds are my cats?

I was told by the person who gave them to me that they were Burmese/Main Coon, but now people are telling me different. Is there a website that I can log onto where there are expetrs at this?

BTW I don't know how to upload pictures on here. Can someone tell me how and I'll upload a pic of them?

Contrary to what someone else suggested there ISN'T a DNA test to determine breed makeup like there is for dogs - nor will there likely ever be.

Odds are your cats are no particular breed or breed mix - just like 97% of the cats on this planet. Cats have been domesticated for nearly 4,000 years and crossbred for just as many so the majority of cats bear no traits whatsoever of any particular breed. I highly doubt someone with a purebred Burmese and Maine Coon would breed them. And if so, I would love to know who they are so the breeders they bought those cats from can be contacted. Purebred cats are sold unaltered only to those that have been accepted into a breeding program of the cattery.

A dna test really won't tell you much about the cat except it has markers for a couple of breeds but unless you know the people who bred the cat AND they say it's a such and such cat, there isn't any way to really and truly know what the cat is. You can make your best guess as some cats have characteristics that would help you guess. A maine coon (which I assume is what you thought your cat was crossed with - is a larger cat and long haired, and comes in about every color but the colorpoint ones. Not all Maine Coons are large but it's one of the breed's characteristics. A burmese is an oriental cat that comes in several colors and face shape is different from the MC. A picture would help but as I said, it's highly unlikely that your cat is anything more than a 'mutt' cat unless you know the breeder of the cat. This is not to say that your cat is worthless - actually I think that it makes it a better cat - usually the alley/mutt kind of cat is very intelligent and genetically more healthy than purebreds. So count yourself lucky and enjoy your kitty!

Do you mean Burmese/Maine Coon mixes? You probably won't find pictures of those on the web as it's not a recognised breed.

If you mean one is Burmese and the other is Maine Coon you just need to use Google to search on each of those terms and return images of each type.

One thing I can tell you is they will be shorthair if they are Burmese/Maine Coon mixes. Burmese are shorthair cats and the shorthair gene is dominant over the longhair gene.

To show pictures I think you need to put the pics on Photobucket or Flickr and put links to the photos.

  • well the best thing to do would be to take them to the vet and get a DNA test, however this will cost around $200 dollars.

  • ask your vet
