Why is my moms cat not using the litter pan now?

Mom has a cat that is about 11 or so years old. This cat has always used the litter pan, until here recently. Now she will go where ever she wants. Rarely will she use the litter pan anymore. What could be the reason for this change in behavior? The litter pan is keep clean, no change in litter brand, and the litter pan has not been moved.

Update:

Wow. I have received some very good and detailed answers. Thank you all very much. I will pass on this information to my mom. Now there is one thing in the environment that has changed. They got new carpet in the room where the cat pan is. Possibly this is causing the behavior.

when cats enter their seniors years more health problems can present themselves. consider going to the vet and have her looked at. crystals are not uncommon in some older cats as well as bladder issues. best of luck to you.

The first thing to have checked is the urine for crystals, stones, or uti. If that is normal then it may be something in the environment that is upsetting her. Any type of change in routine can start litter pan problems even very minor ones. Your mother being away from home at differant times, any type of new furniture coming in, a new noise around the litter pan. If that is the case you need to relitter train her. Put her in a small room like a bathroom with her litter box, food, water, and some toys for a few days until she is using her pan again. Make sure nothing is on the floor that she can urinate on. Once you let her out give her another litter pan in a differant area as well so she has a choice of where she can go.

Add: Absolutely, new carpet can have a very strong scent to a cat, keep her old litter box there and add a new one to another part of the house. She will still need to be relitter trained once they start with that habbit they just need a refresher. I would still see about having a urinalysis done just to make sure she has no underlying infection.

I know how that goes. One of my cats will be 13 years old in late August.

For awhile she was having the same issue and the result was me taking her to the vet, and having to get a water-proof sheet to put under my regular sheets so she doesn't ruin my mattress.

The older a cat gets the harder it is for them to control themselves. My cat favored beds when she did this-- usually it was the very same bed she was sleeping on.

Your mom's cat may or may not have something wrong with her that needs to be checked out by a vet. If the behavior continues, I suggest making an appointment to get her checked out.

Have you changed the brand of cat liter? You might want to take her to the vet. Sometimes when cats get old, they get certain ailments. Maybe the cat can't make it to the liter box so she goes where ever. I would suggest taking her to the vet. It's possible she may have a bladder or rectal issue.

    Good Luck!

Give the cat a break its 11 years old now which is pretty old for a cat let her spend her last years happy doing whatever she wants because as soon as you know it she'll be gone.

id try buying a whole new pan for her. its quite possible the urine smell has soaked into the pan itself and she smells it and thinks the pan is dirty. cats are extremely clean so a new pan may be all that is needed
