My 2 cats suddenly hate each other...what should I do?

I have 2 cats, they're 12yrs old and we got them both at the same time, they got along just fine for all these years, just today one started growling and hissing at the other. Cat 1 had cut his foot a little while ago (he has done this before) so we wrapped it up and kept an eye on it. Today I looked at it again and it wasn't getting any better, so I took him to the vet, at the vet he interacted with a bunch of other pets (including a dog, which he growled at the entire time we were there) when I brought him home Cat 2 was waiting for him. once i let him out (I had him in a cage to take him to the vet) they sniffed each other and seemed fine. But then I noticed that Cat 2 constantly growls and hisses at Cat 1 every time he comes around him, this cat has never hissed at all before. I currently have them separated because of this, but I would like to know what else I should do.

invite them over for some "soda" then give them so much that the burping bubbles make them laugh.

    dont you watch spongebob?

It's possible that cat #1 picked up a scent from the vet's office that is offensive or threatening to cat #2. I suggest that you give them both a thorough bath with lots of soap and rinse them well. Wash cat #1 first. This will probably do the trick.

Since your cat visited the vet, he has new, unfamiliar odors on him. That is the reason your other cat is hissing at him. The smell should be gone by tomorrow and things should return to normal.

It's the strange smells he has on him. If you don't want to wait until they wear off, try (if your cat is willing) taking a sponge and only lightly dampening it with water, then rubbing it on his fur. It won't exactly get the smells completely off, but it will probably make your cat want to clean him or herself. After a little bit your cats should get back to normal.

It sounds like cat 2 doesn't recognize him because of his smell. Do you give your cats baths? I give my cats baths every week with a specific shampoo; that way when one has to go somewhere and ends up smelling weird I can give him a bath with that shampoo so they'll smell familiar again.

it sounds like you did the right thing. just keep them separated and keep watch on cat 1's cut.
