In Western cultures a wedding ring is traditionally worn on the left ring finger. According to tradition in some countries (derived from Roman belief), the wedding ring is worn on the left ring finger because the vein in the left ring finger, referred to as the vena amoris was believed to be directly connected to the heart, a symbol of love.

The left hand ring finger, between the pinky and middle finger. In olden days it was believed that there was a vein that ran from that finger directly to your heart, this is why the engagement ring and wedding ring is worn on this finger.
