What will happen to this employee?

Where I work (residential contractor) there is a bit of job shuffling going on with the duties of a few positions. The employees involved (not their real names) are Jane (admin asst also responsible for permits and programming), Chris (scheduling), Daniel (designer), John (designer), and Ralph (boss).

Recently Jane made a $1200 mistake while covering for Chris while he was out on leave. The following week a meeting was held to review issues with pulling jobs and errors on the pick sheets. During this meeting Daniel and John both were explaining that the pick list software has problems with data loss and printing the wrong data as a result of the data loss. Ralph was not up to date on Jane's duties so he asked Daniel, Chris, and John because Jane was not present at the meeting (Ralph decided beforehand that her presence was not required). As a result Ralph decided that Jane needs to teach Chris everything about the city permits so she can focus on programming issues. Considering that Chris is handling the permitting issues, after the software upgrade is complete will Ralph fire Jane? Or will Jane go back to her original duties?

Update:

Jane's duties: Ordering city permits and inspections (primary), backup for Chris (secondary), handles IT duties as needed, answers software "how-to" questions, maintains the databases and the in-house created software. She does not do any design work. She claims to know AutoCAD and apparently it isn't a lie because the designers are always asking her "how to" questions several times a day.

Ralph is the vice president of the company and head of the design department. He is also Jane's boss.

John and Daniel are the only designers. Both of them are needed in order to keep up with the average workload.

Chris is the scheduler. He schedules all phases of every single project. Files and distributes the paperwork. Handles all paperwork including the payroll report for the crews.

My guess is that since this is in a residential contractor office, someone will be phased out bcz of the market right now. With that in mind, errors generally are not tolerated when times are tough and someone needs to be let go. It could be that Chris gets let go bcz he was out on leave (I know, I know, if you take a leave it 'is not supposed ot be held against you' but everywhere I have ever worked it is...it's an unwritten thing). Could Jane be on the block? Yes bcz of her error BUT if she proves herself to be a strength in other areas she could remain. Any way you slice it, if someone is let go the chances are great they will not be replaced which means others better step up and pick up that persons work load. The trick is always (not just when times are tough) make yourself a well versed asset to the company so that letting you go never crosses their mind.

that's going to depend on what else she does as an admin asst in part and how willing Ralph is to take on the last of those duties himself. The job market is tight and will be more so when it comes to housing jobs. On the other hand if she can keep proving that she does many jobs faster and more reliable then it may be that they cut one of the designers since those are expensive on the payroll.
