Why do poor people get stereotyped as lazy?
I work 60 hours a week, never been on any form of government assistance and I am dirt poor. I am trying to continue with my education but my family could not afford to send me to school and assistance is not easy to come by at my age. But you all are condeming me to a life of poverty because you think tax breaks for the lower class is encouraging laziness? We weren't all born with a silver spoon people. Be honest, how many of you have been born into middle -upper class?

I was born into a family that makes just over 30k a year. Yep. Am I poor? Perhaps. But I support McCain, because despite what many believe... his plans will be more beneficial for you, I, and the rest of the economy.

You live in a country where the amount of money you can make is only limited by you. You don't need a real good education to make a decent middle class living in this country. You need to find your niche and go for it.
That being said, that is why you get stereotyped as lazy. I'm not trying to be mean here, but if you don't make the money you need to make, you need to move on and do something else until you find the money you need.
Education or formal education is not the answer. I've got a high school diploma and make $75,000 a year. My brother has a Masters Degree from Harvard and barely makes $40,000. He also has a $110,000 mortgage to go with that fancy piece of paper.

I was born in the upper-middle class. My mom was not. She lived in the Bronx, and worked her way to where she was. She happened to find talent in an area where lots of money was to be made and she worked her tucus off. Because of her experience, SHE thinks people who can't rise up don't do so because they are lazy.
I do NOT agree.
Born with a cushion under my bum, I can see how it would be hard for others in my situation to not recongize your hardships. Everything is easy for us.
It is hard to rise up when the world is against you. It is easy to say someone isn't trying hard enough when they don't have your luck. It is easy to attribute failure to a person because of charateristics.
To the person who said he must have a vice-you perpetuate the stereotype. You assume he has something wrong with him because he can't succed-say why ypu think so, and you would answer the question
To the person who said this is not a stereotype because someone influential didn't say it, than yiu obviously do not know the defination of a stereotype-which is a view on a group perepetuated by the general public.smooth.
I hope eggs come into your basket soon.

My dear, it is the Republicans who created this stereotype because they represent the richest Americans and they never want to share their wealth, so they try their darndest to convince all and sundry that the poor are to blame for their poverty, so that they won't have to. If they succeed in blaming the poor for their misfortunes, then nobody will see what the rich are up to, will they? No, then the middle class and working class will be so busy haranguing the poor that they won't see the rich pocketing the free cash of the middle class and working class and getting richer by the minute! And of course that's precisely what the rich do all the time, isn't it? That's what Republicans love! That's why they get the rank and file excited about issues like abortion and wars in 3rd world countries, you see. It's the same as the Romans holding gladiatorial contests -- it distracts the uneducated masses while the rich carry on with their greedy activities getting richer. It works rather well, don't you think? OOPSEY! I suppose you've figured out which way I vote now, haven't you?

I think you are the one labeling yourself as poor. I would say... determined. Everyone must start somewhere. I had no, "silver spoon". I worked 3 jobs, to include 1 full time in order to make it through 4 years of college. Thats classes on weekends and unpopular Fridays. Was I poor? Monetarily yes. Physically, psychologically, most likely. But, determined never the less.
Its not tax breaks that encourage the laziness. Its the hand outs for unlimited or undetermined time periods. Its those who reapply and reapply over and over... And get it! Its those on SSI that never had to work a day in their lives. But as family and friends all know. Are fully capable of doing so.
They are the target of these remarks.

It's not fair, is it? Radical Republicans don't care who has to suffer so that they get their unfair tax breaks. They keep talking about how money should stay in the hands of the rich so that the rich can invest it in business - thereby creating jobs. Unfortunately, all our business is just about gone from America, so that money would only "trickle-down" to people in other countries.
Elizabeth, you're a good, hardworking person. Keep chasing your education - it's worth it. If you're in community college right now, be sure to get your A.A. Lots of students don't get it because they think they'll go on to 4 year university and won't need it. But if you get it, you'll always have that no matter what. Don't leave community college without it.
Whatever you do - make sure you vote for Obama. McCain has the same economic plans as George Bush. Did they help you?

Unfortunately, there are alot of meanspirted, narrowmidned people out there today that are very rude and insensitive to other people's misfortunes and sadness. Also, some people are ignorant of other people's plight unless they have walked a mile in their shoes. My heart goes out to,I wish you nothing but the best in life, and I hope you can further your education and get a career where you can make a decent living. I know from personal experience being poor in this society is hell. You don't know how your going to pay your bills or where you will be able to get your next meal. It really disgusts me when some of the politicians and their friends and family claim they care about the little guy,and act like they can identify with people who are struggling finacially and then go and wear dresses and suits worth thousands of dollars at their conventions

The right uses it to separate and divide us. Limbaugh, Hannity and the rest of the Fox News crew want to plant a seed that if you aren't rich you are lazy and unmotivated and that someone is getting something from you without working. I was a republican and felt the same way until I ended up with three jobs making less than I did 30 years ago with benefits. I later in life realized that it was just hate and lies. And of course, who in the world wants to give money to someone that doesn't want to work nobody, but they surely know how to exploit it.

you are so right, I got laid off and I had never been unemployed since I was 16, but finding a new job now has been hard, and so I have to do temp work which does not pay all the bills, so I got a roommate, and for the first time in my life had to go to a food pantry. It isn't that would not rather work, I just can't find a job now

The poor people that are considered lazy are the ones who make no effort to get a job as long as the welfare checks roll in. They have more babies because they will get more welfare money. It doesn't sound like you fit that category.
I wasn't born middle class, I came from a poor single parent family and had to pay my own way through college. Please don't punish me and redistribute my wealth just because I make more money than the average person.
