American Army Bases (in the UK) - Shopping?
I know it's a very random question. I once knew a friend who had a brother serving in an American Army and he stayed in the UK in one of their bases, when she traveled to see him, she always shopped in their stores in their bases, as they only stocked American products and I was wondering, do you have to be a member of the family to gain access to the stores?
Thank you so much for your answers, I really appreciate it =]

To shop at AAFES in the UK you have to be an active duty ID card holder or the dependant of one, or have a contract position on base. You cannot shop on base if you are just a family member. American retirees can shop on base, but they must pay VAT.

You have to be an authorized ID card holder to shop on post. The US gov't has "status of forces agreements" (or SOFA) with each country that we have military bases in. Although each SOFA agreement is a little different from country to country, I've never heard of anyone who isn't an authorized ID card holder being allowed to shop on post. I worked at AAFES here in Germany. The only people authorized to shop on post who weren't American ID card holders were other nation's troops who were at our base for training. Our base is a multi-national training facility, so we have lots of different countries training on the US post. The other troops were only allowed to purchase basic necessities like toiletries.

You have to hold an American Govt ID to shop on post, unless the Local SOFA laws state otherwise. But Ive never seen that.

at the bx in the uk, there are some rules, when i was deployed to an american airforce base because of the tax, (US goods their were taxed at a lower rate) we had a limit of $5 a day, and we weren't allowed in the main shop just the small one.

Hi from Michigan, US - Google the item you want and check out the mfgr. A lot of them will ship directly to you. Hmmm - now I'm hungry.

Why would you want American products in England? European products are so much more superior. If you want my advice, go off base.
