My carpet got soaked with water now smells like mildew, how do I get rid of the smell?

Carpet may feel dry but there still may be moisture trapped in and under the padding. You may have to peel back the carpet and dry padding that way or in some pads they can t take the wetness and have to be replaced . And then get re-stretched back into place, professionally would be best GL

How To Get Mildew Smell Out Of Carpet

Okay, your first goal is to to get everything all dried up. You need to get the carpet dry and also the padding underneath if it is wet.

Peel back the carpet to see if the padding is wet. Hopefully it isn t as that makes things much easier. If it is, you need to dry up underneath. The best way to do that is to prop the carpetting up somehow.. (perhaps put a chair underneath it) Then you need fan power.. If you have high powered fans, or can get one, then Great! If not, use whatever fans you have and blow them underneath the carpetting. If this takes a few days, that is okay.. We are looking for a complete solution, and so it is worth it.. I recomend that you keep the fans going at least another 12 hours or so after everything seems to be completely dry.. Any moisture left under the rug can come back to haunt you in the long run. Another thing that would help with this drying process, would be to have a dehumidifier going in the room. Once, the drying process is taken care of, then you want to kill the mold and mildew that is causing the smell. If you can get your hands on "Micro -ban" which is sold mostly in janitorial and restoration supply stores, that would be great. If not, Home Depot sells a product called "GermO Ban", made by Zep. You want to spray one of these products under the carpet, and above.. Don't be afraid to use a lot. This is what will kill the mold, and you want to kill all of it. Then once this has dried, lay the carpet bak down.. You can get a profressional to pull the carpet back down, but you may find that you can do it yourself to satisfaction, which will save you at least one hundred dollars.. After this you can get your carpet cleaned if you like... You should use a dry foam system.. Also, the chemicals that kill the mold smell pretty strong in their right, but give them time.. the smell will go away.

We have had many issues with smell and carpet, First i would recommend as a tradesmen, get rid of the carpet anywhere near a water source. When you have carpet in those areas they hold water near, in and on the floor boards, this causes rot (have seen it many times) also, It hides rot and hides it will you could start with something that needs a band-aid , and end up with a civil war style bloody stump.

But to really answer your question Baking Soda solves most of our problems it pulls out moisture and removes smells. What we do is dump a box or 2 on the floor and walk it in for a day or two then suck it up. If what i just described doesn't work do it again, and if that doesn't work rent a carpet shampooer, and do the baking soda again (pull moisture out again)

Think I'd get rid of the "friends" first!

Might be worthwhile investing in a professional clean, then plenty of fresh air around the room and I swear by 1001 carpet freshener - you just spray the foam on, it dissolves in (without wetting the carpet) and you don't need to vacuum it up afterwards.

I would run a steam cleaner over it all. The most important thing to when steam cleaning a carpet is to go slow so that you suck all of water. If your carpet still smells after that I would suggest riping it all out including the pad.

if at all possible pull the carpet back to get at the padding clean the padding with a spray foam cleaner that has an odor mildew remover then pull the padding back and do the same thing with the floor then when all is dry keep some fans on the area put back together with some baking soda on floor- padding

You need to rent a rug doctor steam cleaner and purchase 2 gallons of extra-strength white vinegar(about$2.50a gallon). Put the vinegar into the steam cleaner and run the rug doctor over your carpet. Wait about 12 hours and run the rug doctor over it again using the hottest water. If you pull up on the handle as you are pulling it you will get the best suction out of the machine. If you are still getting dirty water out of it then run it one more time with HOT water.

You need to do this so mold won't form and vinegar kills mold.
