Do you think Obama's "National Security Force" is scary?

I've changed my mind after I read the entire excerpt from his speech. Here it is;

Obama, July 2, Colorado Springs, CO: [As] president I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots [from 75,000] and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals, like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their effort connected to a common purpose.

People of all ages, stations and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem – they are the answer. So we are going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an energy corps, to conduct renewable energy and environmental clean-up projects in their neighborhoods all across the country.

We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, and to be there for our military families. And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set.

We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We need to use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where American can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment and skill sets. You'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities.

This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda and make their own change from the bottom up.

Update:

It's not quite as scary when I have read the entire quote.

Update 2:

Bob S... Thanks for your comments. I see your point and I'm not looking for more and more government agencies. We need to scale back the Federal Government. What was being lauded was this "National Security Force" was a NEW federal law enforcement force that would be under the control of the President. That is not the case.

It might be when he realizes that he will not get the volunteers he thinks he will...then it will become mandatory. I don't like the idea of the President being in control of a security force period...it's too much power. That's how Hitler started you know. It just takes a little bit of power and a cause to be dangerous. I'm quite sure that Hitler wasn't a murdering bastard because he like to be...he thought he was doing the right thing. So...you never really know now do you? Enough people are so enamored by Obama that he could get away with a lot right now. I wish people would at least be cautious before they leap.

First I want to address a particular point: If only Obama were in charge of this 'security force', then yes, that could be risky. However, currently the President is not in charge of any of these already-existing program Obama plans to expand on. So long as it remains that way, I do not see this as a valid argument.

Every single point made in this speech portion is a set of "Duh!" moments. Each and every one of us who want this country to improve must agree that If John McCain had made this speech portion, my fellow Republicans would not be opposing so strongly. {Just because it is Obama, I mean c'mon guys! Regardless of whether or not he was born here, regardless of whether or not he is Muslim... These points are good ones.} Personally, I still disagree with many of Obamas professed plans, but I do not hate him and recognize his intelligence. This is a good idea SO LONG AS these programs remain in the charge of the citizens. Assisted and regulated in order not to violate laws, yes, but still...

Personally, I will be helping as much as I can. I already do in as many ways as possible, but this idea will increase the ways I can help my community and country.

Back in the '50s, Nikita Kruschev threatened/ promised that our country would fall to communism bit-by-bit. I won't go into the whole thing, but One plan was to encourage our citizens to deride our leaders. To not stand behind them, to encourage (not just questioning and oversight of our government, but...) as much disagreement, argument and fighting against our elected officials as possible. Most especially the POTUS. They have done very well with that plan. I will not fall for it. I may disagree with Obama, and I didn't vote for him, but I will not work against him. I may question and work against a policy, but will support Obama and defend him. SHould the current lawsuits prove him ineligible, well, what can you say? That, however is only a POSSIBILITY and unless it becomes a reality, I back our President. If something 'scares' you, work against the parts, points that worry you, instead of making it personal and deriding Obama. Take a good look at how you are thinking and WHY.

before you decide it is NOT scary at all i want you to consider something...

in 8-12 years.. the ferver for the democratic party will fade.. (if you doubt this grab a history book and look at the parties of the elected presidents we pretty much give each party 8-12 years in the white house then swap)

assuming what for me as a conservative would be worst case scenario and it goes 12 years the next president would be VERY conservative.. someone as far to the right as Obama is to the left....

assuming your "civil defense corps" has grown to 500k by then.. fairly reasonable assumption.. do you want someone that far to the right having control of them??

it is easy for liberals to say i want this because i trust Obama.. .but remember the conservatives will have that EXACT same power/tool in 8-12 years.

    Okay . . .

This convinced you that it is a good idea . . .

    How?!

"We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Read that statement. It means he wants a brownshirt thug force.

The rest of his leftist psycho-babble was about programs already in place and already in progress. All he wants is ALL YOUR MONEY to mismanage as he pleases and dole out to his sweetheart SIGs.

After they are "just as powerfull" as the military what are they going to do?

glad we can can this guy after 4 years....... or can we???????????

I read through it twice and remember the speech. I do not find any part of it scary. It is similar to John Kennedy's speech where he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."
