Books which mention Jesus?

I am across a piece in a paper today which said that we know Jesus was born because it is recorded in the bible and it is also recorded in other old history books from that time

Can anyone tell me which old history books if any that would be

Update:

the Quaran is a good idea as the muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet but I never heard that Tacitus wrote about him.

Update 2:

Thank you everybody. There were some really good answers which I can now work on particularly Mathew's list. I regret that someone just answered "the bilble" and since I already mentioned that in the question seemed to be just getting two points

Update 3:

I have looked at the writers mentioned and most of them were writing many years after the events and taking their information from other texts written by christians so you would expect them ot mention jesus just as we are doing now. The really interesting one is King Abgar Uchama of Osrhoenes.who it is claimed had a letter from Jesus and got a reply. I will have to do some more research on that

There are no contemporary accounts of the life or even existence of jesus.

The Romans (who were meticulous record-keepers) make no mention of jesus during the period that he was supposed to have lived. The nearest to a contemporary account (Josephus - which many question as to validity in any event) was written over a hundred years after jesus' supposed death.

Imagine the same situation today - a leader of the stature of a mix between Gandhi and JFK combined with the oratory skills of Churchill or Hitler creates a massive following and is then brutally executed at the height of his powers... and no-one mentions it!!! Gandhi died in 1948 but on a parallel with jesus, the first recorded mention of him wouldn't be written until around 2050. Even today, an account written over 100 years after the event would be regarded as questionable second-hand hearsay.

I now of one on the top of my head

    Isaiah

Isaiah 9:6 - " Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulders, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace

I can guarantee that there are more books, you can probably look it up somewhere, search "prophecies of Jesus birth" or something

There are tons of prophecies other than Jesus birth, including Jesus's death, and His second coming, found in the Old Testament

Isaiah 53 talks about His death

It is not possible to know if Jesus actually existed but it is certain that the biblical account of the birth is a fictional story

The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and Paradise Lost are two good examples

you will need proper accredited sources to get that information such as gods channel in USA. etc.

I saw a short program on TV other week sorry I cannot recall the name or channel but the two folk being interviewed ( one was a professor) were adamant that Jesus was born and around that time and did mention there were other documents that were available that prove he existed.

    Tacitus.

    Tactitus wrote that:

"Consequently ... Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations. Called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberias at the hands of the Procurator Pontius Pilatus, and a deadly superstition, thus checked for a moment, again broke out not only in Judea, the first source of the evil, but also in the City." Annals (XV.44.2-8)

Josephus. The Christian faith is centered in Jesus Christ, who lived in the Middle East about 2,000 years ago. According to the Bible (which is the source of our information about Jesus), He became a traveling preacher and teacher when He was about 30 years old, and was put to death by His enemies about three years later.

But the Bible tells us that Jesus was more than a great religious teacher. The Bible says that He was God in human flesh -- not just a godly person, but actually God as well as a man. His virgin birth, His miracles, His wisdom, and especially His resurrection from the dead and ascension into Heaven -- all attest to His unique nature. The Bible puts it this way: "In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form" (Colossians 2:9).

Why did God come down to earth in this way? He came so we could know what He is like -- especially in His love for us. But He came mainly to tear down the barrier between us and God -- a barrier caused by our sin. He did this by becoming the complete and final sacrifice for our sins through His death on the cross.

I invite you to discover Jesus for yourself by getting a Bible and reading about Him in the Gospels (the first four books in the New Testament). When you do, you'll discover the greatest truth of all -- that God loves you, and He wants you to come to know Him and become part of His family forever.
