Why are lottery jackpots not tax-free in the US?

    because the govt is not going to let you have millions of dollars tax-free...they want their cut.

    Because Congress hasn't made it tax-free. Some states don't charge state income tax for wins on their own lotteries for state residents.

    Because our elected representatives did not choose to make them tax free.

    In the us, everything is income unless exempted.
