The best time to fix your kitten?
We adopted another rescue kitten and we are confused as to when we should get her fixed. She is 5 months old now. We are also wanting to get her de-clawed at the same time

This kitten can be spayed ANY TIME, now. She's old enough, and getting spayed BEFORE her first "heat" is preferable. She'll heal faster, and her chances of developing "uterus related" problems ( cancer, etc ) diminish considerably.
However......as to the declawing. Please READ the following website, and see if you STILL think you want to do this!

This will explain to you what all is entailed with the procedure......
Hope this helps.......and you reconsider the declawing. Furniture can be replaced...........
Good luck.....to your kitten!!

Now is a good time to get her spayed. 5 to 6 months is perfect. Some people do it alot sooner, but it is not recommended. You can definitely do it when the kitten is an adult, but most kittens get spayed at 5 months so it's not so painful and the risks for complications is minimal.
YOU SHOULDN'T GET HER DECLAWED. There are so many complications associated with it and if you truly love your kitten you wouldn't want to put her through that and would ACCEPT HER JUST HOW SHE IS.

As soon as the vet will allow it . Especially if it is male.
A male kitten fixed early in life is less likely to develop spraying problems... and yes fixed males can spray!
And if you must declaw do it when very young... I too couldn't do it to my first cat who I loved too much . A rescue cat...well declawing is a horrible thing but better than having the cat put down. Too many cats put down for lack of homes so in that light I won't judge those who feel they must do that.
(Still check out the Soft Paws before declawing!)

Yes to the spaying now. Kittens as young as 4 months old can and do breed and get pregnant.
NO to the declawing - read this first. You will have more problems with declawing then you may have now.

declawing is actually amputating the first bone of each 'finger' on the front paws. cats experience that as violent and traumatic and can develop behaviors to compensate for the feelings of defenselessness, such as biting. you can get softpaws nail caps or just clip claws weekly and avoid that.

Wait until she's 6 months old to spay her, you can declaw her at the same time if you choose to.

Yeeey for you for getting one from a rescue centre :)
Erm, I think my cats have had it done when they were around 6 months, but i don't think we've ever had them de-clawed. Buy them a scratching post and let them do it the natural way! :D
