Both of my cats have runny stool. What can I do about it?

My cat Pete has been having soft stool for a while. So both Pete and Chubbles had a dewormer within the last month. They didn't test positive for worms, but the vet thought it would be a good precaution to take. Since that didn't work I changed their food from Nutro to Innova. Now Pete's stool is doing a little better, but Chubbles' is now really runny.

I would take them to the vet had I known it was Chubbles with the runny stool this time, but now I am going to work and my Vet will be closed all weekend. So I'm looking for a short term remedy until we can go to the vet on Monday.

Chubbles has never historically had any problems digesting any foods. Pete has a weak digestive system. Neither have a history of parasites. They are acting completely normal, the only problem is the liquid poop. They are both 1.5 years old.

Any suggestions about what could be the problem? Any things to try to remedy it short term until Monday?

Metamucil. Mix a little in warm water first, put in the Innova and mix well. That will firm up the stool nicely. That's one of the brands I use for my cats, and my one with IBS is helped immeasurably.

Your cat(s) might have developed something of a grain or gluten allergy, so look for a low-to-no grain food and try them or one out on that. Metamucil (psyllium) is not a grain, nor does it have gluten.

For my IBS guy, I use Wellness, EVO (when I can get it), Innova, and, surprise, surprise, Fancy Feast (they have no-gluten formulas). And I always add a little Metamucil!

    Good luck.

ADDED: Depending upon how quickly you switched over to Innova could be part of the sloppy poop problem. Lots of cats need time to adjust to a new food, and it is recommended to make the switch over a few days to a week with a little more of the new food added each day. When I moved over to Innova I went a little too fast and had a few days of sloppy poop issues.

A sudden change in food will cause runny stool and/or diarrhea. If you switched suddenly w/out mixing the new stuff in slowly, this could be the problem.

Remedy for diarrhea (since you've had the worm testing done) is K-Pectin. The only ingredients in this are Kaolin and Pectin. People used to use Kaopectate on their pets, but don't do it anymore because it now has an aspirin derivative in it which is dangerous to your pets.

I just bought a gallon for less than $12.00 at CalVetSupply .com. It's called Kao-Pec - it's only ingredients are Kaolin and Pectin. Depending on the size of your cat, you give orally every 4 hours. (I give 3ccs to one cat and 1cc to the other kitten every 4 hours. Within 1-2 days, the runny stool and diarrhea should be gone. If not, just continue for a couple more days.

My cats are stressed right now because my house is full of boxes and they're showing different symptoms. I have 2 with feline acne (for which I'm using "Hibiclens" - works great!) The diarrhea cats are over their problem. The feline acne, I cleanse 2x/day and rinse off well (never get in mouth, eyes or ears). Just as an aside.

p.s. I tried EVO with my cats and they all got diarrhea. I switched back to Innova (same company).

If you are giving the kitten milk that we drink, then that is probably your problem all wrapped up in one. A kitten at that age should not be getting milk anymore. She will drink water. Once you stop the milk her stool will probably stiffen up. When you go to get the kitten food, only get the dry food. You can go ahead and get wet food, but I don't recommend giving it to her now, it will only keep her stool loose. Putting this advice to use should make everything better in a few days. A cat does not need to much wet food anyway. Once her poop is normal, I recommend only giving her a spoonful of wet food a day. I have 1 kitten, and 2 adult cats, neither get any wet food, if I do give them wet food I consider it as a treat. It probably wouldn't hurt to give her some wormer to. Good Luck to you, and I hope your kitty gets better!

I would definitely take your cats in to the Vet! It could be a problem that needs to be treated.

For now, you could try giving them canned pumpkin. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber and will help "bulk up" the stools.

I give canned pumpkin to my cat when she's constipated too. It works really well, and my cat eats it like it's some sort of treat--she loves it!

Be sure you ge the Pure canned pumpkin, not the pumpkin pie mix because the mix has extra stuff in it. Just get the Pure stuff:)

The stools won't harden up overnight anyway, so you might as well wait for the vet. May start on another food. Perhaps dry and canned. Remember, no milk at all, only water to drink.

There are no short remedies when it comes to the health of pets and animals.

Pls pick up the yellow pages and call a Vet.

    This is my quickiest solution.

It might be aswell to put them both on a sensitive dry diet, this would have to come from your vet though.

I wouldnt do anything until you see your vet on monday

Try dry food I would not panic yet. or do not feed them for day wait until monday then take them to a vet

I would change their diet to dried foods with plenty of water in bowls separately. No milk!!
