Why do cats tuck their front legs underneath themselves while resting?

All cats do this.

I will try to explain how I understand this pose. When cats are in this pose it means they are comfortable and relaxed, it also means they feel safe, when they sit like this they know they are not in any danger that will require them to move quickly or to pounce.

I think they just like to keep their paw pads warm. I think it also supports their chest. Kinda like how we'd prop our head up on an elbow or cross our arms behind our head.

I have another cat that seems to always lay with legs stretched out - http://www.ferretocious.com/luna/luna020909-1.jpg Interestingly enough, she's a very nervous cat so the comment someone else said about a cat feeling relaxed could very well be true. Maybe Luna lays like this so she can get away quickly?

I've always wondered how cats can lay on their paws and not end up with them numb. Ever wake up and found you were sleeping on a hand? Then you can't feel it for a few minutes till you shake some blood back into it? A cat could lay for hours on its paws and still get right up and run off. Because it's comfortable. And while yes, all cats lay like this at some point, that's certainly not the only position cats rest in. It's also comfortable to curl up, lay on their side, straight out, lay in a Sphinx-position, so on and so forth. One of my cats virtually never lays like this, he's more comfortable with plenty of room.
