i need help with a car, left at my house legally, without the papers. how can i sell it?

my problem started when someone rented my building, after a few months that person left leaving a huge amount of money that he should pay, instead he left some items and a car, now i sold a lot of his stuff now, it's legal cause he didn't pay his rent, and just left without telling me anything. Now, my problem is how can i sell the car that he left? he didn't gave me any papers, and i can't contact him anymore. what should i do? i really need to dispose the car because another client needs the building. what should i do to legally sell the car without the papers? HELP

Update:

can i get a salvage title? yeah, the owner abandoned it because he doesn't want to pay the rent. how can i change the registration name? so i can sell it to someone. can i still use the salvage title?

If it is over 30 days, then you can consider it abandoned. You can get a salvage title and sell it. You must also show proof that you attempted to contact the person to come and get it. If you have no forwarding address, then wait the 30 days and go ahead.

The laws vary from state to state. There are ways in some states to obtain bonded titles for cars taht are sold with only a bill of sale and not title. Other states only require a bill of sale.

You need to check your states laws, and do it right. You may be at a point, where the hassles of obtaining legal right to sell it, will not equal the amount you may get for it.

Consider having it towed as an abandoned vehicle, and calling the rest of the money a loss

You can not sell the vehicle without owning said vehicle. You could possibly go to court and seek abandonment or something along those lines. I truly do not know, I would seek legal counsel on this so that you yourself handle this legally.

Contact your state motor vehicle department and ask someone there who can answer your question.
