Can the public library (San Diego) bill for items 5 yrs old, that one has already paid for?
Hi all,
I lost a San Diego public library book back in 2004, but I PAID for it and now I received a bill for it. I called the library and they said the only way they can remove the fee is for me to come in with the receipt showing I paid.
My problem:
I don't have the receipt- who would? And is it even legal for them to bill after so long?
Even if it's legal, how can they remove only if I have receipt?
Finally, I'm not even in the United States anymore! I'm in Japan and won't be back for another year!
They say I have to come in to the library! Since I had paid, I have no inclination to do so, or have someone pay it for me- please Help!
Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you,
Christie
BTW: Since the 2 ppl who left answers did not read the above (tho thanks for trying):
1) I was asking if it was legal to send a bill after 5 years (part one of my question- this was the ?)
2) I have ALREADY PAID for this book. Yes, I lost it- which is why I paid, thank you. I am not holding the book hostage- which I know is wrong, thus the payment.
Finally, to make things a bit clearer:
1) Re-Billed for paid book, from 5 years ago- legal or not?
(I'm guessing it's legal)
2) However, I have already PAID this bill; they are contesting it, and I do not have the receipt.
I should not have pay for something already paid for.
Thank you in advance for your advice.
Sorry if I sound a bit frustrated- I'm wondering why ppl would leave useless comments disregarding the obvious points listed above. Thank you in advance. (^_^)

The library doesn't make there money on overdue books. If they only want You to pay for the book You should not pay interest, best option would be to find the book and return the book. Otherwise if the cost less than about $30 go ahead and pay the fine. it's not right that you should borrow a book and not return it. Tell them you have already paid and and negotiate with the librarian
