My car starts but cuts out after a few seconds?

I have a 36 ford that hasn't run in 3 years.

I got it to start saturday but it doesn't run long.

First, it ran for a second.

Then yesterday it ran for about 30 seconds, then stopped again.

It has gas in the carburetor and when i filled the fuel pump, it ran longer but it keeps shutting off.

Any ideas?

Even though fuel is getting to the carburetor the engine could be starving itself do to tarnish and gunk left from fuel being left in the carburetor for a long period of time.I had an 88 mustang with the same problem. In my case the engine was flooding itself do to gunk blocking the jets causing it to choke itself. You may need to pull the carburetter off and do a good clean up.Clean all the jets and change the fuel in the tank if possible. When fuel evaporates it leaves behind chemical and mineral deposits that can block fuel.Good luck

Depending whether it has a fuel filter, it could be crystallized or clogged. The choke could be gummed up, not opening the carb. Possibly the plugs and wires, or even the timing. You could also try draining what ever fuel is in the tank and replace with fresh. Like you stated, the car hasn't run in 3 years, I am sure the fuel is no good anymore.

the indications propose the timing chain has jumped. A verify of the ignition timing will tell that - if the chain has jumped the timing will be way retarded. i don't believe of that is gas shipping (and that i do not even recognize in the experience that your 1986 is injected or carbureted) because virtually any gas difficulty that limits the skill so significantly will preclude it from commencing. One very last component, although. Your 1986 probable has a catalytic converter. no matter if it really is the unique it must be plugged. it isn't demanding to envision - decrease backtrack the bolts that carry the collector at the same time the position the exhaust manifold connects to the exhaust pipe and attempt to blow into the tail pipe. (Now sparkling the black ring off your face.) If the converter is to blame for the idle choking off you'll particularly be in a position to stress any air by it.

Sound like the fuel pump is weak or not working at all. also check the fuel filter if it has one.
