Good question. Mohamed would fall down, flop like a fish (have a spell), "wake up" -- and then say, "Allah says . . . " and whatever he said was written down by those around him on whatever could be found. After he died all these "writings" were gathered up and made into the quran. Mohamed could neither read nor write. And that's the quran.
It was "written" to unite the Arab tribes into a tribe of religiously motivated murdering thieves and give ultimate power and control to a small group of "holy men."
Keep in mind that when someone fell down and had a fit in front of the Lord He cast demons out of them.

Because the Arabs didn't have a book. The Jews did and the Christians did but the Arabs' religion was word of mouth until the Quran was written in seventh century and they also could then say they'd got a book!

Quran is written for several purposes :
To direct people in the right path
To protect people
To make people understand religion
To inform them about the other prophets
To use its Suar for prayers.
To explain and make so many issues clear (like marriage, divorce, relationships...)
I wonder why you only asked about Quran?

It was created to give Muhammad specific advantages:
The Quran says that some marital privileges apply only to Muhammad. 33:50
There is a long list of women, including 1st cousins, who were made available to Muhammad. 33:50
Muhammad could “marry” the women he captured in battle, they are “spoils of war”. 33:50
Muhammad could marry any woman who “gave herself to the Prophet” if he desired her. 33:50
Muhammad had the right to “put off” or “receive” any of his wives as he pleased. 33:51
Muhammad could “marry” the women whom his “right hand possesses” (slaves, POWs). 33:52
Muhammad could not “swap wives” no matter how beautiful they were to him (33:52). I didn’t realize that Muhammad was so shallow as to consider a woman’s beauty when it came to marriage.
Don’t annoy Muhammad by overstaying your welcome at his home or talking freely to his wives. 33:53
Nobody is allowed to marry any of Muhammad’s wives after he dies (33:53). Some of his wives were still young when he died. What if THEY wanted to get remarried?
The Quran specifically allowed Muhammad to marry the divorced wife of his adopted son (33:37). Then it tells us how to feel about Muhammad’s marriage to his ex-daughter-in-law. Surprisingly, this marriage was ordained by Allah! So Muhammad is “blameless” or “innocent” (33:38).
Muhammad’s wives will receive double punishment for lewdness and double reward for submission to Allah’s messenger, who just happens to be Muhammad. 33:30-31
Muhammad’s wives are not like other women, they must stay in their house (33:32-33). The Quran said that this was for their own protection - an excuse often used by domineering husbands.

It was written because that is what that society needed at that time to come together under certain rules. Religions are almost always created for this reason.

To deceive mankind. It was instructed by Satan not Gabriel. A quick way to get 25% of the world's population to keep Satan's laws instead of YHWH's.

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

All religions basically exhort mankind to be righteous and eschew evil. But Islam goes beyond that. It guides us towards practical ways of achieving righteousness and eliminating evil from our individual and collective lives.
