There are many viruses and bacteria around everywhere. Usually our immune systems keep us from infection. But if we are cut while handling something not clean (like potting soil) the fecal matter can enter the wound in a large quantity and become infected.

The MRSA virus is especially deadly, and the Hep C virus is encapsulated so that it can actually live one whole week on a dry counter top. These and other especially strong viruses can kill or make a person very ill.

If your immune system is run down or is down from some medicine you take, then you are especially susceptible. The best thing is to not get wounded, or if you do, to wash with hot water immediately and use iodine on the wound.

Staphylococcus aurelius? Gangrene? Necrotizing fasciitis? There's quite a lot that will make a home in an open wound and then proceed to eat the rest of you. Before the invention of antibiotics this happened all the time; wounded soldiers as late as WWI had limbs amputated for what we could today consider minor wounds.

Evolution is catching up. We turned ordinary staph into MRSA through reckless use of antibiotics and now dying from a minor open wound is increasingly common.
