Who here considers themselves both a Christian and a Pagan?
There seems to be a number of folks I have run into here on R&S that say they are "Christo-Pagans" or some similar name. This utterly baffles me, so I'm posting a question to those folks to help me better understand where they're coming from.
In my knowledge of Christianity, one can only follow and believe in one God. It says in the Bible: "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me". Knowing this, how can people call themselves Pagans (or Wiccans or Witches, whatever term you want to use) as we are polytheistic? Pagans work with deities from all over the world. Some pagans do spellwork and rituals and do craft magic that the Christians consider a sin. Christians are big on sin. As a Pagan, I am truly confused as to how someone can say they are a Christian Pagan. Isn't that a total polar opposite? Isn't being a Pagan a sin in the eyes of the Christian God? How on earth can you be both?
I'd really like to know how people who label themselves this can explain it to me. I'm not being nasty, I'm honestly curious and want to understand this better.
I'm sure I'll get a lot of smart*** answers as that's the norm on R&S, but please try to keep the snark at a respectable level. :)

Your assessment is correct. The closest you can find is actually Catholicism, which in fact is poorly disguised Paganism and not truly Christian. To understand this one needs only to look at their policies and practices in relation to direct scriptural edicts (don't worship angels saints etc., don't bow down to graven images, call none father but the Father in Heaven, one is saved by grace not works, etc.). In Catholicism they even go so far as to pick so called "patron saints", reminiscent of the pagan practice of choosing patron deities (in fact stolen directly from them). All that claim to be Christian are not Christian you know them by their "fruits", just like everyone that calls themselves "pagan" or "witch" (or whatever label is convenient to them) correctly represents those people. A pagan can call themselves a Christian all they want ,but their true colors will show.
P.S. I didn't get to answer another question and would like to add my two cents. The more ardently a person in your life tries to convert you the more you should understand that you are loved. Many new Christians in their zeal forget that sometimes they need to tell you about what has happened in their life and let their new life do the rest of the witnessing for them. As spiritual newborns they many times charge off where they are not prepared to go; how many times do young children want desperately try to help do something they are not equipped to do yet? Again I say take it with the patience that you can for someone that loves you very much and does not want you to wind up in eternal torment (by your own choosing not God's I might add). Firmly and gently tell them you understand that their heart is in the right place, and you appreciate their concern and love for you, but right now you are not ready to give up living for yourself and that you know where they are if and when you are ready (assuming you live that long). I hope that can help.

I'm not, and I can't answer for the Pagan part, but I can expound on the idea of Christians involved in witchcraft. My father is a Christian, served on church council, chairs committees. He is also a witch.
He feels that the Levitical law, the Jewish law, does not apply to Christians, same as Christians who do not eat kosher. He also doesn't think that when you do something in the name of Christ it counts necessarily as "witchcraft", after all, Jesus did tell his disciples to heal and do iracles in his name.
He also doesn't think Paul's words are scripture, so take that as you will. He has taken a lot, a lot, of what he thinks about such thhings from the Amish pow-wow healers in our area.
Of course, witchcraft can be practiced in any religion, the Christo-Pagan part I really don't understand either.

I wondered about this too. I notice that in the article Emily posted, they refer to the "Christian Pantheon". This shows a complete misunderstanding of the Christian trinity. Christians worship a Triune God; a three-in-one diety, not separate gods. This is the main problem Christians have with Mormons calling themselves Christians, because apparently Mormons believe God is a job description, so to speak, and believe in three separate dieties. I think this might be at the root of some Pagans who think they can be both. Please understand, I don't have a problem with anyone who wants to emulate the Christian principles of peace and love. Whatever makes the world a better place. God bless.

That what I always thought about Christianity thinking Paganism was wrong but I had a friend in the Navy who claimed he balanced Catholism and Paganism... I didn't get to discuss it with him as much as I would have like to but we were drinking when we talked about it

Your understanding of Christianity is correct. The self-titled Christo-Pagan is trying to have a realtionship with the God of Christianity on his or her own terms. Anyone who claims this is possible is teaching falsehood. God bless.

I just don't get the whole Christo-Pagan thing either. I look forward to seeing some of the answers you get.

I sorta do. At least Pagans are trying to take care of Mother Earth. I belive in a God. Yet, I see the huge difference between them. "Witchcraft"/Christian= oxymoron.
