I am making a cake for my boyfriends birthday......?

He enjoys eating pork and last year he and his mates roasted a whole pig on a spit. I was thinking that i could make him a cake in the shape of a roasted pigs head, i have how to make the shape straight in my head but i have a few questions.

1) what is the best type of cake to bake? - was thinking pound cake or sponge dyed red for meaty effect.

2) how to make the outside shiny? - was thinking a sugar caramel brushed over the outside.

3) will marzipan on the outside be OK, i was thinking marzipan because the white one has a similar colour to skin especially over the red cake.

Any hints and tips will be gratefully received.

Thanks SK!

I would only make a pigs head cake if they are having a roast pig this year. Bake a sponge in a round cake pan.

When cool cut it in half lengh wise spread raspberry jam then cream on base put the rest of the sponge on top. Buy a cupcake for the snout attach it with icing. Make the icing with pink food dye. When icing is set dip a knife or spatula in hot water smooth over the icing this will make it shiny

Here's a link for a pig cake pan:

It's very inexpensive and you can then frost it with buttercream tinted the color of a pig reserving some for darker shades.
