  • Cat food/ slug issue - Help needed!?

Just recently I have been noticing slug trails in my cat's dry food, but the other night I got up in the night to find about 7 huge fat leopard slugs feasting on my cats dinner, please bear in mind that the distance between the kitchen door (where I know they get in) must be about 6 miles for a slug!

I have tried salt under the door but this does not last long, is there a better solution to this problem which will not involve me having to use complicated DIY skills (as I have none!), I am not too bothered about slug death occurring in the process either, the little darlings have scuppered any attempts at growing any thing other than brambles, dock leaves and clover all summer.

My cat has started to refuse her food ( a situation made worse by the fact that my upstairs neighbours are feeding her as well, I'm going to go and have a word about that tonight) I cant blame her as it has been covered in slug goo, so as well as keeping the nasty little bleeders out of the house does anyone know any good ways of making the cats feeding area safe and slug free??

  • My cat does not like to interact with people at all! What can I do?

I took a young adult female cat (not much over a kitten really) as a favour to a friend in February last year. Her name is Marmite and she is a healthy beautiful cat, she has safe space to play outdoors and lots of nice warm snuggly places to sit inside, she gets fed regularly (with food she likes, and will happily "ask" me for food) and for the most part seems to be a happy cat. She knows that if she miaows at me I will open doors for her etc and I think that she has accepted me as a housemate.

The only issue is in the entire time I have had her she has not once come to me for affection and she bolts whenever anyone walks too near to her or goes to stroke her.

Since she moved in she has grown immensely in confidence. She has gone from lurking in the corner and hiding behind the washing machine all the time to openly walking into the room when I am there, playing furiously with her toys, and openly getting me out of bed on weekends when she feels I have had enough sleep and she is hungry.

However I have not stroked her once in all this time and she runs away if I get too near to her (if she is in her cat bed she usually just gives me a dirty look and sometimes hisses if she feels like I am invading her space).

Is there anything else I can do to Help her feel more confident or is it just a case of some cats are just not that friendly or take a long time to get used to people?

I am not considering getting rid of her in favour of an instant joy kitten, if she is just an anti social cat she is still my Marmite and I will just have to get used to her I suppose...would getting an additional cat help do you think?

    Cheers

  • My Cat Marmite will bring me dead animals as gifts but is still scared when I go to stoke her, what gives?

I took on Marmite in February as her owner was moving away, she was about 9 months old when I got her and very nervous to be in a new place as she had come from a home with lots of other cats including her mum.

Since she has been living with me she has been very skittish and spent a lot of time hiding from me, over the past few months she has gotten more confident but still won't let me fuss her.

She is happy enough to play in the flat, mostly when I am out although she will play in the living room now when I am home, and she sleeps on my bed. She will take cat treats out of my hand occasionally and will sit on my leg as long as I dont move and give her treats.

I recently went on holiday for a week and my mate looked in on her and fed her, which she has done before. However when I got back last night Marmite had left a dead mouse on the floor in front of where I sit on the sofa, there was also evidence that she had brought a bird in, but she has either eaten that or it got away.

I thanked Marmite for the mouse as she was watching me through the window when I found it, and she spent a lot of last night in the living room, but she still wont let me stroke her and runs away if I move.

    Is she making progress?

  • Am I doing the right thing with my new cat?

I have recently acquired a young (9 months or so) cat from a friend who is moving away.

She comes from a good home with two other cats (who are being re homed with the original owners family but my cat, Marmite, was unable to go too) and has not been mistreated in any way.

Since she has been at my flat she has been hiding a lot, which was frightening at first as I could not work out where she had gone! Now I have worked this out and I know that she is safe, she is eating well and using the litter tray etc but she is very nervous around me and will not come up to me, unless I give her a treat, and even then she won't let me stroke her and runs off if I move.

She is much better than she was and most nights she will come to the door of the living room and look at me, she is also exploring rooms both during the day when I am at work, and when I am at home, as long as I sit still and make no sudden moves! I have left catnip toys about the place and made spaces for her to snuggle up etc.

Also she was allowed outside in her old house however as she is new to the area I have decided not to let her out for about 6 weeks, or until she is content at mine

Is this normal, am I doing the right things and do you have any advice that will make her feel more at home without frightening her? I have had her for 2 and a half weeks.

  • How long will it take me to lose 40lb?

I am currently eating 3 smallish meals a day (probably in the wrong order as I still eat my big dinner in the evening as this is what my work day allows before you all start on about eat less in the evening etc etc, I am aware of this rule and when I can I live by it however it's not always as easy as that) which typically consist of Breakfast - Banana, glass of OJ and a bowl of bran or cornflakes with Soya milk. Lunch - Salad (5 cherry toms, 1/4 oinion, 1/2 bell pepper, 1/2 carrot grated, and one green chili chopped. sesoned with lemon juice spices and a little salt) and a bit of oily fish, usually tinned or smoked mackerel, or hummus or a bit of chicken and a pitta bread or chapati. and tea (dinner) is usually either a bigger version of the lunch salald or something like home made pasta sauce (on pasta!) grilled chicken rice and salad or somthing along those lines but always homemade from fresh ingredients.

I drink mostly water and do not drink tea or coffee except for weekends and i have cut down on my drinking a lot cutting out beer.

I do approximately 30 minutes walking per day as part of my day to day (sometimes more) and add to this 20 -30 mins 5 times per week on an eliptycal trainer.

I have been at this for about 3 weeks now and i was wondering how long it will take to see some results, inch loss etc, I'm getting married next year and would like to go from a size 16 (uk sizes!) to a 14/12. any advice?

  • I am making a cake for my boyfriends birthday......?

He enjoys eating pork and last year he and his mates roasted a whole pig on a spit. I was thinking that i could make him a cake in the shape of a roasted pigs head, i have how to make the shape straight in my head but i have a few questions.

    1) what is the best type of cake to bake? - was thinking pound cake or sponge dyed red for meaty effect.

    2) how to make the outside shiny? - was thinking a sugar caramel brushed over the outside.

    3) will marzipan on the outside be OK, i was thinking marzipan because the white one has a similar colour to skin especially over the red cake.

Any hints and tips will be gratefully received.

    Thanks SK!

  • someone asked a question in this catagory?

does the media glamorise drug use, and Steph d asnwered with a very grown up commet saying that people should be clued in enough to think for themselves why did this get so many thumbs downs and get hidden, in my opinion this shows that the media are doing a bad job of educating people about drugs, how may times to we have to say just say no doesnt work, but educating people for thier own saftey does. if anyone who answers this question gave thumbs down i want the know why
