What size of outdoor pen do I need for my 2 year old 70 lb. lab/retriever mix? He is an inside dog. In city.?

I want him to have a big enough pen, but I have only seen 10x10 pens here. City guidelines are vague on such issues. He will be spending 2-3 hours outside on nice days when we are home and in the yard.

If you're looking at "pre-fabricated" dog pens, you won't find them much bigger than 10x10. Any larger, and you usually need to construct them yourself (or hire somebody to do it) out of chain link or livestock fencing. Or just go all the way & fence in the entire property, if you're able.

In all reality, if you're just going to have the pup outside for a few hours on nice days, with supervision....then a 10x10 pen is suitable for most any dog, IMO. It's not designed to give the dog a place to "exercise"....it's just a secure outdoor enclosure so you can put him outside for a while to have a nice chew on a bone, or to give him a chance to bask in the sun & dig in the dirt, watch squirrels and do other various doggy things. If you make it a point to exercise him on a daily basis with a walk, romp in the park, game of fetch, etc.....he won't be needing this pen for "exercise" purposes.

I would imagine with a little creativity & elbow grease, you could also buy 2 10x10 pens, and combine them to make a larger pen. You would just want to ensure any of the "alterations" you made to the panels & their connection points were just as sturdy as the original or better, so the dog cannot break out of the enclosure.

If he's the kind of dog who likes to run when he's outside AND you plan on always being there to supervise, you could also look at aerial tie-outs....generally consists of a 50 foot elevated line attached to 2 trees or posts....and the dog is connected to a shorter cable with a pulley on top, so he can run back & forth along the aerial line. I don't generally advocate tying a dog out for long periods of time & without supervision....BUT as long as you're there with him, it can be a fine way to give him some room to run.

Just a thought, good luck :)

It all depends on the amount of yard you have. You might want to look into building a pen instead of a per-manufactured one. That way you could customize it to your dogs needs like: shade, wade pool, dog house, etc. But i would give a large dog at least a 10 x 20 ft pen minimal.

If this is the only size you can get then put a small wading plastic pool so he can lay in it labs love water & plenty of toys at Pet's Smart they sell these Kong balls where you can put a treat inside & dog tries to get it they're made of durable rubber & gives the dog plenty of fun chewing my 2 labs have them & really enjoy them. Then when you get home take dog for a long walk they need alot of exercise OK Good luck

all of them act in yet differently whilst teething. This sounds like it ought to get volatile when you consider that he ought to get dehydrated surely (something to do not forget). There are ingredients that have a tendency to loosen issues up somewhat - like apple juice (juice ordinarily does). in case you haven't any longer already tried bananas - they have a recognition of bobbing up young little ones constipated so it ought to help harden issues up some. One concept: each each now and then whilst young little ones are constipated, it appears that evidently like diarrhea when you consider that it fairly is the only waste they are able to squeeze out - whilst fairly they're fairly constipated. Constipation is so painful for them and makes them no longer choose to eat (no longer countless room in there for meals once you may no longer pass #2). Crying uncontrollably does no longer be uncommon. in simple terms having a million-3 diapers an afternoon seems very low if he has real diarrhea - you recognize, human beings many times run to the washing room countless situations in an hour! So, increasing water intake may well be stable the two way. perhaps ask the pediatrician approximately that -they are able to many times tell by using doing a actual examination if the youngster is constipated. Bananas might in simple terms make the priority worse if he's fairly constipated. So, if he's constipated water, prune juice, and apple juice are stable thoughts. Getting a 2nd opinion is a competent, risk-free thought.

I would say about a 12 x 20 ft. pen.Labs need a lot of exercise. You could put a small wading pool in there for him to splash around in,too.
