I'm 25 and I want to start college and get my teaching license and become a math teacher in a highschool. Is it too late? Or should I just go for it and get it over with so I can get started in my career as soon as possible?

First of all- people have successfully started and finished college at much greater ages than 25, so the answer is an unequivocal NO it is NOT too late.

If you already have your high school diploma- you can have your teaching certificate within 4 years if you go to school full time. If you cannot go to school full time it may take an additional year or two.

Secondly- math teachers are greatly needed, Because there is a shortage of them, this is a great time to become one. Many districts are offering bonuses to people in the field of mathematics, and the federal government has loan forgiveness programs that can make it so that you don't have to repay a cent of your loan if you work in the area of mathematics teaching in needy schools (you will have to look at the specifics of the program to see what and where is required)

So- what are you waiting for! Go for it.

Rayne, You are not too late. When I attended college there was an 81 year old woman that began her college career. I do not know if/when she finished it but she was a hoot in class. She got along very well with everyone and always had a great amount of zest in her answers. You just need to take it slow at first and keep in mind that as you progress it may become more difficult for you to keep up at home. I assisted my wife in finishing her degree by picking up the housework and she is now working full time as I am disabled. You can do whatever you decide but education is certainly a plus in this day and age. It will also be good for your children to see you working to0 attain a degree. Have a great time. Thanks, Eds

I am 26 ( will be27 In May) and this message is just what I needed (although) it is a little old. i put off going to college for a year after I graduated high school in 2005. I called it giving myself a break seeing as I maintained an A average in my classes. About a year later, I enrolled in College and found out I was pregnant. Needless to say, that halted my college days, I dropped out as my pregnancy advanced........all these years passed and I find myself envying my peers who have a life, are living comfortably and have the ability to buy and do what they want, when they want. Not only that, but I have a very precocious daughter who looks up to me. I refuse to go to her school career days like " Hi, Im so &so's Mom and I work at Burger King"...im not knocking anybody's job or anything I just want to be able to show her that throughout all adversity, you can still BE somebody and follow your dreams. Ive been contemplating going back to school for a while now and Ive finally gotten the balls to JUST DO IT. Im so very excited because I know that it will open doors for me and also allow me to provide for my daughter and be a good example for her. I've gone from feeling deeply depressed, feeling like nothing-a failure---to being inspired. Nobody has directly commented on my "post" but ive read the previous ones and you all were very encouraging----thanks

It's never too late! I'm a college junior right now, and while a lot of students are my age, there are quite a few as old as my mom! Never be afraid or discouraged - you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice to avoid going to college based on age.

Go for it! It's never too late to start college. My step father started college when he was in his 30's. If he can do it, you can do it. You shouldn't put a hold on your career and your life.

you're still young. no such thing as being too late to start college. go for it! you'll have a great story for your students when you start teaching about how you waited until 25 to begin your career. there's some inspiration in there!

It's never too late to increase your education. My dad just earned his associates degree a couple years ago and he is 50 right now. (it took him 13 years because he was only able to take 1 class a semester while he was doing 12 hour midnights at his job). It's never too late if you have the motivation and it's always worth it :)

NO! Never too late to learn. MY favorite teacher and personal friend didn't finish university till she was 40. She is an amazing teacher! Go for it! 25 is early in your life. If you get your career started early, you can change sooner if you don't enjoy it.
