When operating the lever it tilts the mirror assembly, so how do I see the same view of the car behind only dimmer. What is the theory?

there is a mirror behind a peice of glass, during tha day you have the mirror flipped on to see the full reflection of the car behind you, at night you flip the mirror up so all you see is thew reflection of the light on the glass, if your still curious go to a junk yard and break one open.

There is a true mirror behind the glass. When there is a bright light shining you tilt the mirror out of the way and only get the reflection from the glass.

What Johnka said - it's a prism and you are either looking at a the mirror or just the glass.
