If someone immortal gets life in jail, is it forever?

Let's try and be open-minded here rather than just a straight yes or no.

Let's see you back up your answer and explain it.

Honestly, as the law stands now in America and around the world, it depends entirely on where they were convicted and sentenced.

In America, it varies from state to state. In some states, a "life" prison sentence literally means "until you die," but in other states a "life" sentence may have a time limit, albeit a very long one, such as "99 years" or "101 years." These are often the states that sentence people to things like "10 life sentences," because technically, each one has a time limit.

Around the world it is even more complex. Some countries, like Brazil and Spain and Portugal) have done away with the concept of life sentences entirely (so if you are immortal, you may want to move there and commit your crimes). Others have special rules around such punishments (in Russia, only men can receive a life sentence, so if you are a female immortal criminal, you may want to consider moving there).

So in short, your seemingly simple question may prove to be rather complex and requires more information to give a competent answer to.

No, not unless the whole society is immortal or they pass down the person's punishment from generation to generation, through changes in society and government. And I don't even want to think how much that would cost over the many many many years of jail time. Plus life in prison is very rarely actually life in prison, the person would probably be paroled long before the issue of immortality even arose.

Update your question with whether or not people know that he/she's immortal, and it will be very fun to answer.

If people do not know that he's immortal then I think if he did something bad enough to get life in jail, he will have no problem getting free because he can't be killed by anything, so he can just hop in the ocean and walk across the bottom to wherever if he so pleases.

If people do know it would be entirely different because he would probably be put into something that isn't really humanly possible to get out of, considering being immortal doesn't really give you superhuman strength or anything.

First of all a person who is fit for immortal life, will never be put in jail. It is totally unexpected. For what reason should one be put in jail. Only a bad person, for one or the other reason, is put in jail. A bad person can never imagine to become immortal. One should not cross the boundary of imagination.

Obviously, laws would change. Yet, in an insane world the answer is yes.
