When do you get baby's Social Security number?

I cant remember when I received my 4 year old's SS#. I had my baby on the 20th and I'm just wondering because I want to get her on my insurance.

You shouldn't need the social to get your newborn on insurance. I received the card in the mail 5-6 weeks after birth, but my son was on my insurance the day he was born. When the card came in I called the insurance company and gave them the number, but he was already insured.

I don't know anyone who opted not to get their newborn a social security number. It is strictly voluntary, of course, but your baby will need one eventually sometime in his lifetime. Your son could be a tax deduction, but if you'd rather the government keep that money I am sure they'd appreciate it. I am assuming you won't be covering him under your insurance either as he'll need a social security number for that. I can't think of any good reason not to get a social security number for you son. What is your husband's thinking on the pros to not get one?

Here in Texas i filled out the paper work for it while i was in the hospital after i had her and then it came in the mail...they siad it would take 4-8 weeks to get there but it didnt even take that long.

Contact your local SS office and let them know if you never recieved thier card.

Usually the hospital where she was born will make you fill out the paperwork, then you should recieve the card in the mail about 6 weeks later.

I think it depends on the state in where you live. I live in NY and had to go and apply for a card for my son. After that it came in the mail a few weeks later. I don't remember if they needed his birth cert or not. I also brought along my sons hospital papers.

I believe they do that for you at the hospital when your baby is born... they give you a whole bunch of papers to fill out and I think they send out for the SS#. You have to send out for the birth certificate.

You can go to the federal building or call and they will issue you a new card.
