Coming up with an original plot?

Of course it's already been done. EVERYTHING'S already been done. Make it unique or original just by playing around with it and you'll hit upon some ideas you like.

Try some tricks like:

- change something significant about the main characters- gender, age, job

- set the story in a different time period or location

- tell the story from a different character's point of view

- look at what the characters do, and why, and then come up with different reasons they might do those things...then see how that would change the situation.

first what is your simple plot. Break it down so that is one sentence. For example: MC falls in love with her best friend and then finds out he has a terminal brain tumor. How many time's has this been done right. Well now it is time to start branching it out. Start asking yourself questions. Why does main character fall for her best friend? Do they get together? How does she react when she finds out about the illness? etc... Once you answer the first set of questions you can continue to ask more questions from those answers. Eventually every part of your story will be original regardless of how overused your simple plot was.
