The Power of the Uninsured?

As fewer and fewer Americans can afford to pay for health care, it follows that the health care industry will begin to contract...no industry can stay in business for long with out customers. When the non-payers reach a tipping point the economics of running a hospital or doctor's office becomes untenable. We're experienced this in Arizona where several emergency rooms have closed leaving the uninsured with nowhere to go. Currently more and more employers are dropping insurance benefits or raising the cost to the employee beyond what the employee can afford. This doesn't even include all of the millions of Americans laid off, thus losing their insurance benefits. At this point we haven't yet reached that tipping point; that's why the GOP can still get a few hundred thousand people out into the streets to protest the 'public option'. My sense of this is that by the time the next election cycle rolls around we may just hit that tipping point and suddenly we'll see hospitals closing, more doctors with closed practices and yes, actual deaths because ER were closed or ongoing treatments stopped for lack of money to pay them. A lot of protesters are going to wonder just went wrong. HEALTH INSURANCE is like a parachute...if you need one and don't have one you'll never need another one. Give it a think!

Paupers right to vote is a risk the country has faced since Hamilton objected to it, without success.

This is an unpolitical country, and within that context paupers are particularly unpolitical (non-voters) compared for example to social security beneficiaries and Medicare beneficiaries whose voting record is above 90%.

Many paupers are afraid to try to vote because they are not in the USA legally, and they correctly surmise that if they make a fuss about trying to vote they will be apprehended and deported. This should happen far more often than it does. We are basically an open-borders country, more's the pity. But when it comes to our elections, we do try to keep unqualified people off the voter rolls.

What people foreget or remember is not significant. It's what they do that counts. So, no I don't fear a massive pauper's vote in 2010.

In fact, I'll bet it will go strongly the other way. I think Congress will get far more moderates and far fewer progressive liberals in it in 2010. I think the Blue Dogs are much closer to the 2 million marchers now in Washington DC than Nancy Pelosi and Reid and Howard Dean.

Out with the Lefties, in the with Blue Dogs. Let's have some moderation for a change! Those will be the watchwords in 2010.

So, no a vast Pauper's Coalition is not a threat at the polls. The GOP will have a plan on the table by 2010 which will be much more well-crafted than the Obamacare plan. It will threaten far fewer people. It will not raid the Mediacre Trust Fund. It will not set up a Public Option Health insurance firm. It will have modest but efficacious components that people will be able to understand and accept easily.

Based on recent events, I don't think the uninsured will be against Republicans like some might think. All peoples aren't protesting this bill for no good reason. All individuals are beginning to see just how bad an idea most of this bill is. If the Republicans can reach a happy medium , they would stand a good chance of regaining seats and influence. Perhaps this current situation will help them see past mistakes and start working for the benefit of the citizens that elected them in the first place.

One of many disturbing elemente of this bill that I came across wihile going thru the whole 1000 pages (and yes, I went thru a lot of it)- Sec 1234 or 5 if memory serves - states that if people don't willingly get their shots the Dept of human services is instructed to contact the Dept of Defense. Now what in the world is the Defense dept doing getting involved health affairs?!! Sounds like if the house is dumb enough to pass this , they will be turning this country into a military dictatorship, rather than maintaining it as a free REPUBLIC that the founding fathers sacrificed so much for, to form. I am an independent voter and I find this whole business highly disturbing

By the time the election rolls around they probably will have insurance. Obama boo hooed the other day the sometimes they go without insurance for a month. Wow, like don't we all between jobs. You can buy group insurance rather cheap for up to a year to tide you through. I know this can be rough, but if you have no money to buy that type of insurance, you are so poor you could get Medicaid, so I think these vast numbers of the uninsured citizens and legal aliens is overblown. Remember the illegals were counted then. And who does the counting, nobody had ever asked me ? What kind of fuzzy math is going on here or downright lies. Maybe the government should mail the addresses of the local Health and Human Services department to all of those uninsured they must have interviewed.

A good argument, but Republicans know that they are less likely to vote. Besides, they will lie and say that they want reform (even though loads like Glen Beck say none is needed) but that Obama's plans will be bad for the USA.

I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it?

Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2].

Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3].

4) Our present health care system has some serious flaws. For instance, when you hear of a senior that committed suicide due to poor health, they more than likely did it due to lack of insurance.

Seniors in that boat could wipe out their savings to live a few years longer, but doing that would leave their spouse financially destitute. So they're left with three choices. They can either sit back and let nature take her agonizing course, or make their spouse financially destitute, or they can put a gun to their head. Such a scenario happens everyday in all communities across America.

Welcome to America's health care nightmare. Pray you don't end up in that situation.

The Dems do not need Republican Votes to pass their Legislation ~ If Health Care Reform Doesn't Pass it will be Because of the Democrats who Vote Against it.

Again I say it is not just republicans that do not want health care reform Some democrats do not want it and some republicans do want it. So who do I vote for in the next election. I think the power will be even in that manner

No they haven't. Most of the uninsured are illegal aliens that can't vote and most of the rest are people who don't buy insurance by choice and would probably like to keep the ability to choose..

I have two experiences with the Canadian health-care system and neither was anywhere near satisfactory and were actually scary..
