LDS: what kind of food is in your 72 hour kits?
Since 72 hour kits are a big part of Mormon culture, I'm curious what kinds of foods you keep in yours. We're rotating and checking our supplies on Saturday and could use some suggestions.
72 hour kids aren't Mormon doctrine or anything. But, they're encouraged since they help us be prepared and to rely on ourselves. But, they are a big part of Mormon culture (things that most of them do even though it isn't part of the religion), so I thought this would be a good place to ask. Besides, there's no "preparedness" category. :)

Well...the push is to have a year's supply for each person in your household.
Now, a 72-hour kit is just common sense and there has been a big push for them for everyone since disasters like Katrina and Ike.
A 72-hour kit should have EVERYTHING you need to survive for 3 days (including food, water, clothes, blankets, shelter, light, radio, entertainment, etc.) without any help from anyone.
Personally, I have MRE's in mine. They taste better and I don't have to keep so much water. I also switch out my clothes with each season. I make sure they fit and that they are in good repair.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.
According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv/ and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Mine is a bit rubbish. We had a presentation in RS about how you can get all the food you need in two 2-litre bottles concertinaed together, but because it's round it was basically all tins. I think there was a tin of all-day breakfast (baked beans with sausages, bacon and bits of egg in) and a tin of tuna and sweetcorn in mayonnaise.
I had the bright idea once that a very large bar of chocolate (and Cadbury's did a 1kg bar of Dairy Milk at the time) was a great thing to put in a 72 hour kit because it basically keeps forever and contains lots of calories. Can you see the flaw in my thinking yet? Yep, next time I had a chocolate craving I snarfed the whole lot in one sitting.
Why did one guy think 72 hour packs were a nutty idea? I think they're a great idea! OK, so we've never had a hurricane, earthquake, wildfire or tornado over here in the UK, but you never know when you'll need it all the same.

I asked a question a while ago about what people would miss if the supply lines stopped today, basically catching you off guard and not having your pantry stocked. While I'm quite prepared, the items people seem to want were chili, peanut butter, and Lucky Charms. ;)
I have a good stock of water and an alcohol stove made from a Fancy Feast can. Even if it's just the ramen, I have ramen!

Matthew, be watchful of who and what you mock. Just as Joseph of Egypt, who told Pharoah to store 7 years worth of grain and food, the time came when there was great need for the foods that were stored, and Egypt became a rich nation because of following the counsel of Joseph, who followed the commandment of God.
I have basics in my 72 hour kit. Things like ramen noodles, granola bars, gum, candies, onion soup mix, capri sun, beef jerky, etc. I can't remember all of what I've got. For me, it's just enought to survive on, but I fit everything into (I think) a gallon and a half size bucket (with a handle) that sealed once I put the top on. The kit is supposed to store for a year, and cost me $15. My ward put it together early in the spring. Next spring I expect that we will do another 72-hour kit activity, and replace the old one (and then eat the food from the old one). "Eat what you store, store what you eat. Rotate. Rotate. Rotate." :)

We just basically have a lot of pre-packaged stuff that basically just needs water (ie oatmeal, raman, soups etc)
We also have some canned stuff that lasts a long time (tuna, beans...)
Just an explanation: a 72 hour kit is a small kit of food and supplies that you can live off of in the event of a disaster.
Basically, it's just a 3 day emergency supply to use until help can get to you if something bad happened.

canned foods are good but they are heavy. We have powdered drink mixes....you can get ones that are high calorie, we have granola bars, dry soup packets, candy bars, dehydrated fruits. I think that's all we've got right now. This site has some good ideas: http://lds.about.com/od/preparednessfoodstorage/a/...
Interesting that people are making fun. Take a look at what happened in Katrina. There were those that looted and those that were prepared. There were those that had to wait several hours in line just to get water and then there were those who had water stored for emergencies. You can think these things will never happen to you but they do. Hurricanes, earthquakes, power outages, tornadoes, etc have all happened in the US and have all caused looting and rioting for those who didn't have supplies.

Double up your equipment. a toddler won't want as lots meals or water so which you do not probable ought to double up in basic terms upload somewhat greater effective. the main important element i've got got here across is which you need to replace each six months. I do it on my bday (in June) and around Christmas time. i purchase new sweats that are somewhat larger than their modern length. I replace diaper sizes. and that i replace drugs. The heavier or bulkier stuff is going in my p.c... The lighter/smaller stuff is going in a small backpack for them to hold. Even my 2 12 months previous can carry a small mild backpack. i could wager you need to ask around your ward and your loved ones for greater innovations. it is in basic terms what I easily have accomplished.

It's funny - the reason I know about this is that a friend/neighbor of mine is (basically) ex-Mormon. But she still has supplies. A very smart idea. In the event of a major emergency, I now know to head to the nearest Mormon Church, lol (or her house.)

This is a good idea for atheists too! I have two foot lockers full of survival supplies for storms (power outages), earthquake, nuke plant meltdown, whatever...). I do believe in insurance and I am a former Boyscout.
