Feral cat with yellow gums, yellow ears, obviously liver failure, right?

There is a neutered/spayed feral colony that live in the warehouses and fields where I work. I can usually touch them if they will allow it, and one of the friendlier ones (neutered male, about 1 year old) showed up yesterday evening obviously sick, but he ate a little bit and drank some water. He was missing for days so I have no idea what might have happened, or how long this has been going on. He's sick enough that he let me look at him and he's got yellow gums and yellow ear flaps. It's really obvious. He's just sitting around mewing. Is there real hope for him with treatment or should we just have him euthanized?

It sounds like what you are decribing with the yellow color is that the cat has icterus, and you would be correct in assuming that it is a liver problem. Seeing as it is a feral cat, it's hard to tell whether or not you can really do anything about it since you don't know that cat's background or if it has some ind of infection. If you're really worried about the cat, I would take it to a vet, where he/she can diagnose the problem professionally and figure out how far gone that cat is. He/she may be able to prescribe some type of medication, but administering it on a daily basis with a feral cat is close to impossible. It might be better just to have the cat put down, since it seems like he is in pain, and since treating him regularly seems out of the question.

    Hope that helps,

A feral cat in our neighbourhood has icterus and wa yellow like this, and he was given medication and vitamins from the vet and now he's fine. i am not sure it is a liver problem. Go to a vet.

DONT have the cat put down, he can get well, if you want to help help hom to get well, not to die. He can take his medication daily, if you go at the same time where he eats, and he can get well, the cat in my neighbourhood is just fine now!

your cat requires a vet. you say yellow but that is a color and im sure there is more to it than that. yellow, though, is not good or normal. not eating is not normal. its like $40 for an exam at a vet clinic, i know thats may seem like a lot but i hope your cat is worth 40 bucks to you *and said before me, yellow makes me immediately think "liver"

The only one qualified to diagnose that cat is your vet, so don't delay, take him. Trap him with a Humane trap and tuna if you need to. Your vet will tell you what the options are.

I would take him to the vet ASAP to have his health evaluated. At least, if there is nothing to be done, he could be humanely euthanized and not suffer any longer!

Yes - its best to catch him now and euthanize him so he won't suffer.
