I'm trying to decide whether or not to have surgery on my ACL. I have a partial tear and my doctor told me...?

my knee was stable enough that I didn't need surgery as long as I got a brace(which I have now) and it the knee wasn't giving out with the brace on. This was after an MRI and a KT 1000 test. I am playing field hockey on it now and in the spring soccer is going to start. It seems to be doing fine...it hasn't given out yet and it barely ever hurts, I can run the same, etc. I was wondering if anyone has a torn ACL and hasn't had the surgery. After playing sports how did it do? I'm 16 and I want to play sports in college. If I keep playing on it while it's torn is that going to effect my knee in the long run. I'm thinking when I'm older will it be more painful with or without surgery?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Update:

Well my doctor never said anything about it sealing I thought that ACLs never heal just like any other ligament.

I am doing PT once a week.

My daughter is 16 and has a brace that she has to wear until it heals.

She also has a torn but you have to wear your brace when you use your legs the most. The brace will help it heal. If you play soccer or jog or walk for long periods or stand for long periods, you have a chance of injuring your leg more so where your brace while you are doing these things. The ligament will close if you follow your doctors advice and instructions about your brace and what activities you should be doing.

My daughter went to work and did not wear a brace for a day. That day she injured herself because she had no brace so her leg swung to the side and ended up in the hospital. Luckily it was just a little thing. Also doctors said that if it would had been a big injury, blood clog would have formed and gone to the head where she could have died but that wasn't the case. Thank God.

Take care of that knee. And when you play, rest that knee once an while. Let your coach know about it.

    EDIT:

Also, you should tell doctor that you want to go to a Physical Therapist, it speeds up the process to heal.

With only the brace it would take 11 months for the ligament to close or seal.

Physical Therapist will massage or help you do some exercise that will help the speed the process.

Edit: That is what the PT is for. It's so it can heal quicker. My daughter is doing once a week too. It will heal quicker. When you go to your physical therapist, you can ask them. Only if you have a complete torn ligament thats when you get the surgery.

Surgery will cause more of a delay so don't rush a surgery. Make sure you ask your doctor every question so you know whats up!

    EDIT:

My 16 year old daughter told me to tell you that if you do the surgery on your knee, you are going to have to learn how to walk again because of the surgery and it will take longer for you to recover.

I don't know how much surgery will cost. No it won't heal on its own. ACL is a small ligament in his knee, and I'm not sure if you trust your vet, but some malicious vets will say something like this just to bring him into surgery and collect a few hundred dollars from you. This also leads to more checkups afterwards so thats more money out of your pocket. The good thing is an ACL in any animal can operate just fine because the ligament is still there. It can't heal itself because ligaments can't heal. You can save yourself money and skip surgery, but your dogs knee will swell often, causing him discomfort and some pain. And you may have to watch his activity carefully, cuz it'll be easy for him to tear it completely now that its a small tear-making it somewhat fragile. Or, you can spend the money to repair it, which will cause your pug pain for a few days after, but he'll be good as normal afterwards - and you'll have to pay $ for the next few months with check-ups and pain relief shots.

I would have the surgery because then you don't have to worry about it giving out.
