Will EMT training get me used to the sight of bad injuries?
I'm thinking of getting trained as an EMT, however I get upset at the sight of really bad injuries (e.g. severe wounds). I know I can eventually get used to it, but I'm wondering whether the typical EMT-basic training is enough to help me grow a thick skin? or is this is personality trait that I need to walk in with?

It depends on where you train. Riding with EMS will expose you to the most injuries. So will riding with your FD. I'm an EMT-B student, and as far as in class goes, we only see pictures from our book. The actual thing is WAY different. I use to cringe at the sight of a nasty injury, but after you learn what the injury is and how to treat it, all you'll think about is what you need to do to fix it. Learning will help create your 'thick skin'. Good luck!

As an EMT you rarely face serious injuries (9 out of 10 people who call 911 only need a ride to the hospital not lifesaving intervention) however in my personal experience as long as you don't faint at the sight of blood you are usually in too big of a rush to actually notice how gruesome the injuries are but rather you concentrate on what you should be doing and falling back on your training

Some of us bear pain that others cannot begin to imagine. When it becomes too hard to bear without taking action, some people inflict harm upon themselves. It's a defense mechanism which they come to believe will allow them to be in control of their pain, to make it appear in a tangible way, or to distract themselves from their internal anguish. Getting help seems impossible, but it can be done with patience and perseverance. Meanwhile, know that these are not bad people, but rather, people in pain

Education is a wonderful thing, but the downside of filling your head with "knowledge" is that it makes less room for being open to alternatives.
Mostly every eye doctor and optometrist truly believe that THEY KNOW BEST... and quite frankly, they have to... The grim alternative is to face a life crises (like I did), and the complete breakdown of their current life and practice.
The optometry industry is one thing... but it's no use blaming your doctor or optometrist for being ignorant. Rather be happy you've been lucky enough to stumble upon this quick and reliable way to regain your natural vision abilities.

they will definitely help after all what good is training that doesn't cover all areas of problems encountered. it may take a little while but it will work. they are professional at training, don't get embarrassed it could be anyone

totally "different" mind-set;; you're there to help people, not to get wheezy about their injuries, as long as you can relate it to medical context, the other stuff will be ok; remember that if it was not for you, that person would not be helped...good luck, but I think you'll be ok if ya look @ it from a "you gotta do this cuz noone else can" point of view... again, good luck!!!
