Why are divorced parents forced to pay child support for adult aged children?

When there are adult aged children out there whose parents are not divorced, and they are supporting themselves.

Update:

In this case the father is supposed to pay as long as the child (grown up) goes to school or lives with her mother.

That is a good question. It's weird. My brother in law just got done payin' back child support for his son - and the back child support? It was from when the guy was over the age of eighteen.. LOL.. It was psycho.. I never understood it, either.

The only exception that a parent would continue to say child support for a "child" 18+ is if they are attending college, then they'd pay the support for tuition.

They are not ..They have to support them up until the age of 18.In some state each state is different they have to support them until the age of 18 and longer as long as they are still in school/college.

  • The ONLY times that happens is if the child is under 21 and in college full time and still living at home (which is rare) or the child is severely handicapped and cannot move out.

usually child support ends at 18. unless the child goes to college or university, then child support is expected to continue. And parents should be helping with that.

as far as I am aware, once the child turns 18 that's the end of child support. eg, thay are no longer children.

depends on the state but i thought it was 18. if they are adults they are responsiable for themselves. unless of course you ower back child support, even if they are 40 if you owe it you must pay it. that is what i was told.:) check with your state.

They are not... as soon as they reach the age of 18 they are not obligated to pay child support.

Where did you get your information from? because its wrong.

If their kids are going to college they have to still pay it.
