How often should i rotate ammo in my handgun clips?
I have 4 extra clips for each of my handguns.I keep one in my truck(1911 .45 ACP),and one next to my bed(glock 17 9mm).How often should i rotate the ammo to keep the spring in the clip in proper working order.
i do not max out the clips(15 out of 17 on my glock,7 out of 8 in 1911 )
I shoot them about once every month or two.

If you practice with your firearm more often then ammo rotation will not be an issue.....
Just use the gun more often with the various magazines you have then this will not be an issue to consider........

There is no actual proof that shows that storing ammo in a fully funtional clip over long periods of time will weaken the spring. Poor maintanence such as infrequent cleaning or lack of applying a light coat of oil will generally be the culprit when magazines bind up. Then there are the cheap after market clips that are just plain junk to begin with.
For self defense handguns I would reccomend that you shoot each gun at least once every couple of months using each clip that you have thus keeping them on a regular rotation schedule.
This will also clue you in if any of the clips are having problems with functioning properly.
Clean the guns and thier clips after every use which includes a light coat of oil on all bearing surfaces.

Some people will tell you "never" because springs only wear if they are compressed and uncompressed.
In the real world... I rotate mine about every 3 or 4 months... if I shoot like I should they get "rotated" more than that.
At least once a year... any "working" mags get torn downand cleaned out inside. I like to shoot my carry ammo off at least once a year (2 times on my regular carry guns)

It's not the springs you should be worrying about for the .45 in the truck.
Summer temps in there can go to 140 F.
I'd shoot off any ammo stored that way after about a month.

In the 1911 once or so every 40-50 years. In the double stack glock whenever you want. In my double stacks i change it out every month or so, but lately I've just been down loading my pistol.
The 1911's single stack mag will last for 40 years or more indefinitely. So swapping those out is all personal choice.

Never. As in Not Ever.
Properly manufactured steel magazine springs can remain compressed for the rest of your natural life and they will function properly when your great grandchildren shoot them on Take Your Antique Chemical Propellant Arms to the Laser Range Day.
Depending on local environmental factors like moisture and dust you may meed to clean and lube them periodically but not because of being compressed.

Glock uses magazines, not clips.
Just leave them alone. There's no need to unload them to "preserve" the spring. Excessive compression and depression is what eventually, after many years, fatigues the spring. But Glock like all other companies use spring steel in their magazines. It is engineered to work that way.

as quickly as a week in case you reside in or around l. a., CA, ignore walmart. discover a actual gun shop. walmart is often out of inventory. they are getting new shipments a week (regularly M-F) yet ammo vaporizes hours after this is stocked. a line of roughly 12 human beings clears each and every little thing out! in case you insist paying for it at walmart you may ought to force greater effective than 50 miles to a walmart is a lesser populated city. in my case, the Santa Clarita walmart constantly has ammo. it is likewise a 104 mile force. i might ought to purchase a pallet's properly worth of ammo to justify the gas value ($4/gal) and four+ hours of site visitors time each and each way. I in common terms flow there if I business enterprise in northern l. a..

Carry ammo should be rotated every year. It's not the magazine its the ammo.

You don't jack your car up when you park it to relieve pressure on the springs, why do you need to relieve the pressure on the springs in your magazines?
