Canned Kidney beans.... To drain or not to drain?

Hello all!

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on ddrainingoff beans before adding them to chili. I know Rachael Ray uses the syrup but I have heard and seen other chefs rinse them. And I believe I heard somewhere that the syrup was not good and can make one sick.

So, what is the deal?

There's nothing wrong with using the liquid that kidney beans are cooked in. It's a matter of personal taste. Do you want the starch and flavoring of liquid in your recipe? The liquid will not make you sick.

Generally, with kidney beans, I'm a drainer. I find that the liquid is too sweet for my taste.

However, I might not drain them if I'm only using one can of beans and the flavor of the liquid will be dominated by tomatoes or herbs.

To drain or not to drain really has to do with how I'm going to use the beans. If the thick, starchy bean liquid adds something to the recipe I'll use it. If not, then I won't.

It's Not syrup. It is starch water from the beans..

For chili and soups I use the liquid and all. I think it adds flavor as well as the fact that is help to thicken the chili a bit.

So dont use it becuase canned beans are Loaded with sodium, and rinsing them gets rid of the sodium in the liquid.

BTW You Can buy no salt added beans but they aren't eery where. Some supr target have them, or various health stores may also carry them.

the syrup is mostly sugar and salt that's been added to the beans. I always rinse the beans before using them. The syrup is not going to kill you but it doesn't add anything to the dish aside from extra calories and sodium.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

the difference of this is that one recipe needs to have the whole texture and density of the juices included in the can to make the dish a bit thicker , the other is that by rinsing the beans the beans will be free of the thick juices and in turn be added to meat that will provide the thickness needed for the Chili.

drain and rinse to reduce sodium better still soak dried overnight and simmer after a water change less expensive and not as much sodium (salt)
