The First Kitten We ever had that grooms me?

we raise Maine Coon cats, so i have seen and raised MANY kittens.. We have this little one we are keeping her name is Miracle, well she loves all of us, but she has taken a liking to me mostly she grooms me, licks me tenderly bites me ( not hard) , we have had other kittens even adults give love bites ( not hard just a very gentle bite), well Miracle LOVES to clean my hands no one else.. I asked mom she thinks i have more salt then others in house, that concerns me.. salt is not good for her.. I was going to call vet just ask what they think? but intrested in what everyone here says.. Like i said first kitten to do this. Tonight i was on my laptop, she wanted my hand so bad she was trying to walk on keys to groom it. I am bad i give in, i think it is a love thing for her but might be something else too. We do not know. Can you help?

Update:

She was not weaned to early, actually her mother lives with us too, So she could not have been we do watch closely at the weaning and she was normal. it is just weird, really weird

She loves you. As long as you wash your hands regularly, don't worry about it. She's just especially attached to you.

My Rusty has learned I just can't stand his little sandpaper tongue, so he just nuzzles me instead. Buddy will sometimes get behind me in bed and nibble on my hair. He also loves to nibble on my fingers. We are trying to learn now not to bite too hard. When he bites too hard I say "ouch." If he continues to bite too hard, playtime is over till later. We're making progress.

Hello. I have a Savannah Cat who does a very similar thing, except he "grooms" both my wife and me, the other cats and sometimes the dogs. He also "grooms" and suckles a blanket that we keep on the couch. I also had another house-cat who would sit above my head on the couch and constantly groom my hair.

My wife worked for a wildlife refuge in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for several years and came across this behavior before. She says it is an indication that the cat was weaned, or removed, from its mother too young. Using this theory it is likely that your cat may have weaned a bit early and chosen you as its new mother figure.

I have seen animal therapists on television (don't know how reliable television is on this topic) say that obsessive acts such as you describe are not healthy for the animal and suggest that you break them of the habit as soon as possible.

It is also possible that you simply use a hand lotion, or special soap, that the others in your house do not use and she loves the way it tastes. My Savannah Cat goes crazy and rubs all over the floor after I mop; he just loves the way it smells.

I am not an expert, but it sounds more like an obsessive habit than a health issue. Most importantly, if you are concerned about your pet's safety then you should take her to the vet or at least call and talk to them.

Good luck and I hope I was of some minor help.

If you are thinking there is more salt or any other mineral on your skin and she is seeking this, I would not worry about high levels hurting her. The main concerns might be: does she have a mineral imbalance in the first place; do you have a mineral balance? Other than that, I don't think you could possibly have that much sodium seeping out of your skin to hurt your cat.

Maybe she does just want to "groom" you, because she loves you, or this is her version of the "baby thing" in the acting like she is nursing, since they sometimes lick, first. Talk to the vet, and have your own body chemistry checked. Maybe she is your own health monitor?

We have a maine coon and he is just as goofy! I wouldn't worry too much! What worried me about him is I have never seen a cat pant like a dog after playing... vet said it is normal for Maine Coons! Although, sadly respiratory issues tend to be a health concern later in life! Maybe because they get so darn big!

its just love, my misty always loved doing that for me, she was even happier when i pet her with the hand she had just licked down, (wet side petting her) it would pick up some of her fur. it was like we were grooming eachother. you know how if theres two cats and theyre close, theyll just groom eachother, i think thats what she wanted. plus, she was old, and had trouble cleaning anything that wasnt her front paws. misty died easter monday, 20yrs old, just a couple months away from 21.
