What are some ways to keep my puppy cool during summer nights?

We do not have air conditioning so it gets really hot at night. During the day she lays in a pool or in the shade, but we don't know what to do for the night.

Also my puppy is a Shih Tzu Pomeranian mix. Her fur is more Shih Tzu. Should we get it shaved. I read on a website that it is best to not get it all cut off because it acts as a insulator keeping the cool air close to the dog. So would it be helpful to get it cut down a little or would it be best to leave it?

In general, if you can survive, so can your dog. As long as you are keeping her where you are at, and you can stand the heat, your dog can too.

They do make cool pads you can lay down for her.

Personally, I wouldn't shave her. Maybe get her hair down to a puppy cut?

And the pad I was talking about-

Hope this gives you a place to start.

I'd say dont get her shaved because otherwise you run the risk of skin cancer if she burns in the sun. I live in Australia and when my dogs get hot they just lie on tiles, lino or they jump on our glass outdoor table. Generally they don't seem unduly bothered by the heat and they are kept outside all the time, so I'm pretty sure your dog will be fine. If she's really hot though just don't cuddle her alot, or make her play - these will warm her up/ increase her heart rate and then she risks dehydrating etc

There is that risk of skin cancer too or getting burned. I would just spray her with some cold water before bed. Or lay a wet cold wash cloth over her at night.

probably you could bath her before going to bed. place her bed in a cool place, preferably an area where air circulation is high. you could probably buy her a small, inexpensive fan. if these measures are not working, refer to your vet about shaving your pet's fur
