Can a cat get a haircut?

My longhair Persian cat is starting to get lumps in her hair, I can't keep up with the brushing. She's a really hairy thing. Can I get her shaved like a sheep for the summer? Is this a bad thing? I don't know.

Update:

Cafe Mocha, You are fairly judgemental in a way that pissed off my wife./ She said unflattering things about you. I capture and spay ferals. I release them on my property to live in shelters I built for them.

Yes, plenty of people do that, especially in the summer. Most cats like not having all the fur on them. You can take her to a groomer or a vet (especially if she will need to be sedated). Call your vet or groomers in the area to get quotes/requirements.

that is positive to get a haircut to your cat. Many cats hate to be brushed/combed and tangle badly. The ensuing mats are very uncomfortable for the cat. slicing the hair for the summer season is helpful in 'commencing' over as you are able to brush less difficult. that is cooler for the cat and that they shed shorter hair. in case you get a Persian clip (it particularly is a shave down with fur left on the face, feet and a ball on the tail), they look so cute after 2 or 3 weeks whilst the hair is commencing as much as advance back in. One piece of advice -- be confident that whoever grooms your cat is experienced working with cats. Groomers that paintings in simple terms on canine frequently, are no longer a good determination. If sedation is mandatory, that would desire to easily be achieved under the process a vet and you're able to probable get it achieved at your everyday vet's workplace.

You shouldn't be brushing her at all. You should be COMBING her! Brushes do very little to remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and pull out and break the topcoat hairs. You should be combing this cat thoroughly at least every other day ALL YEAR LONG.

If the mats are so bad that they can't be combed out then take this kitten to a vet or a groomer experienced with cats and have the mats clipped out. If you've really neglected the coat then it may have to be entirely shaved down. And yes - this is a bad thing. A cat's fur insulates it from both heat and cold.

If you truly can't "keep up" with this cat's grooming then please surrender it to a no-kill shelter so a more dedicated, caring owner can be found for it. Poor cat.

It's perfectly fine. I have a persian cat too and it's so hard to keep her fur from getting tangled. I have her hair cut pretty short. Plus her fur is super soft underneath the shaggy top coat. Just take her to a groomer.

Take her to the pet store to get shaved, not to much because they need hair . hair makes them breathe.
