Litter training a kitten?

The guy my mom and I live with just got a cat from his friends daughter.

The kitten it two months old. I was reading about litter training kittens and it said to place the kitten in the litter box and let him explore.

well when he was acting like he had to use the box (i learned about that from my uncles dog) I placed the kitten in and he went. He then buried his droppings and stepped out of the box.

Does he need to be monitored more or is he fine?

I am unsure if the friends daughter was working on training the kittens if that question come up.

Most kittens - say 98% of them - will use a litter box without any need of training.

I laugh when I see an ad in the newspaper that says "Kitten for sale, litter box trained."

I laugh because there is nothing special about a kitten being "litter box trained" - it is a natural behavior.

Your kitten will do just fine. Make sure he can always get to the litter box - if you put it in a room with a door, make sure the door is open at all times.

We have one litter box in the bathroom and I made a cat door in the wall so they can get in if the door is closed. The door on the wall where there are shelves, at the end of the bathtub, and there are no privacy issues, even if you stick your head in the cat door, all you can see is wall.

We have, however, had a couple of surprised guests. They closed the bathroom door and a few moments later in walks a cat and they had no idea how the cat got in. One woman let out a scream and we rushed to see if she was okay :-)

We have trapped, taken in, and tamed - to varying degrees - ten feral cats.

Feral cats are cats born and raised without any contact with humans and they view humans as dangers to be avoided at all costs. If you corner a feral cat and don't give it a way to escape, it will fight, tooth and nail, to get a way.

Feral cats and stray cats are totally different things. Strays are cats who once had homes with humans but no longer do. They may be lost, abandoned or dumped, or they may have run away from an abusive situation.

When we trapped the first two feral cats, I put them in the huge 5 foot x 5 foot x 4 foot cage, I had made, with 4 levels. I had put a litter box on the bottom level but I was worried that they would not use it and I would have some messes to clean up in the cage. I checked on them an hour or so later and one of them had already used the litter box.

These were 4 or 5 month old cats who had never seen a litter box before but they used it right off with no "training" necessary.

Your kitten will probably have no problems and will use the litter box regularly.

All of the feral cats we have trapped will use litter boxes, your kitten should have no problem with it.

  • Since your little kitten is already using the litter box the first time you put him in there, he should be fine from now on. But little kitten can be forgetful sometimes, so make sure for the first few days, you be his guard. First thing in the morning, when he wakes up, put him in the litter box. After each meal, put him in again. Once he is done playing, again remind him of his litter box.

If he make some boo boo and goes outside of his litterbox sometimes, don't be alarmed. Make sure to clean up the mistake because if he can smell it, he would use the same spot again. Don't scold or alarm him, but just keep reminding him where the litter box is.

Once he knows where the litter box is and he is using it, he will be litter trained!

    Good Luck!

Most of the time you don't need to "box train" a cat. Their mother does that! They are much better than dogs in this regard; once they learn where the appropriate box is located, they will keep going back to that spot. Just be sure it is cleaned out at least once a day. Cats don't like smelly cat litter or litter full of waste. If it gets too dirty for their sensibilities, they will find somewhere that better suits them.

that's fine. just make sure the box is available to him. i have month old kittens and they have a litter box. its just an instinct.

Cat's are wonderful creatures in the sense that they are clean and tend to "Hide" their "business". I will say though when they feel threatened they may go somewhere else in the house to let you know to do something about it ex. introduction of other new animals (dogs, cats) but it should be fine they are pretty self sufficient.

I would monitor him some more, just until he goes by himself. Good luck with your new kitten :)
