I have a black cat that looks like a panther. I would like to name him Sambo...?

but my friend says that's racist. What do you think?

    "Sambo" is considered to be a racial slur (see the wikipedia article below). Even if you like the name and don't have any racist motivation at all, you will probably run into people who get offended or jump to the wrong conclusions.

    There are plenty of other good names out there, so my recommendation is to find a different name that avoids unnecessary trouble.

    It's not the name itsefl, but the connotations laying behind it.

    Think about this:

    I knew a guy who called his dog "Francesco". It's not a commn name at all for a dog, but his neighbor first name, who he detested like hell, was Francesco, and he chose this name for his dog so that he could insult his dog ans swear at him openly and loudly just by calling him as his neighbour.
