10-week old kitten with rectal prolapse?

I have a rescued 10-week old kitten that gets rectal prolapse. He is on a special diet but I ran out of food. What can I replace this special diet food with till I can get him back to the vet on Monday? It has to be a wet diet.

I've also been told by the vet to buy baby food "chicken flavor", but, it is so expensive.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Donna

Update:

@ AnnieB:

You're welcome. This isn't the first "special needs" critter I have had. I rescue cats/kittens for our local Animal Foundation in memory of Otis. He was a gray striped tabby who's back was broken in 2 places by a pit bull. I bottle fed him from 7 days old. Laid him to rest at 1 1/2 yrs. to prevent him from suffering any longer. He peed from a whole in his belly and couldn't control his anal sphincter muscles. No weekend vets in my area except for the U of I 1 1/2 hrs away. They wanted BIG bucks I can't afford because I'm still paying of Otis's large bills. BTW, chose the baby food.

@samar, I do know the proper way to feed a kitten. This is a special situation that caught me off guard. Trust me! And thank you!

susan n, I believe it is anal prolapse from the description I found on google. The vet did place sutures on 7-27-10 and removed them on 7-30-10. But it happened again after vet hrs. today. I did get baby food which is what the vet suggested last time I spoke to him.

Is it really rectal prolapse or is it anal prolapse? Rectal prolapse is a much more serious condition which, I understand, does require surgery.

Anyway, I assume the issue is a diet that will involve no straining.

I would choose a pate-style food such as Wellness. It contains no fillers so there should be little "extra" to eliminate. Kittens and cats on diets which contain all meat and no fillers have a much smaller stool volume.

If you want to insure sufficient water intake you could put some water in it, maybe 20% by volume. You could add a small amount of animal fat too but foods like Wellness already have plenty of fat.

If you can't get to a pet store you could temporarily feed a pate-style not so good canned food. Just examine the label carefully for anything that does not sound like meat!

If you can't get cat food at all you could whiz some raw or cooked meat in the blender ( include fat! ) with a bit of water. Cooked egg yolks are good too.

I did care for a kitten with anal, not rectal, prolapse and he required no special care except occasional dabs of Preparation H. I kept up with him after I found him a home and he had actually outgrown the condition without surgery. It went back in.

Thank you for rescuing the kitten and I hope you will ask more questions about him so we know what is going on.

Firstly i think it's great that you took on this rescue cat despite it's problems. However, it is a 'special' food diet because this is what he needs and it may not be safe for him for you to alter his diet or offer alternatives. I would phone your out of hours vet practice and explain that you need more food or contact a cat shelter who may have some in stock.

As for the chicken flavour baby food - it may be expensive but unfortunately that is one of the drawbacks of taking on pets, especially those with meical complications.

    hope you get something,
