How much does it cost to save a baby's cord blood?
I keep getting information in the mail but none of the companies tell you how much it costs. I am just looking for a ballpark figure.

I think it was $2,000 plus $100 a month.
You can try donating it to public storage instead. That is free, and it has a chance to be there if you need it. If nothing else, you'll either help someone else, or they'll be more willing to let you use someone else's cord blood should anything come up.
However, not all hospitals do public storage, and you may need to use a service like cryobank international. They only take a few applicants a month though.
I applied for CI public storage, but they had already met their monthy quota. Make sure you send in your application on the right day. You can call and find out the best day for it to arrive to them. They fill the quota in a couple days each month. Many requests, few spots.
In future, public storage will likely be expanded for anyone who wants to store cord blood to do so. But not yet.

With CBR it cost $2155 up front and then it cost $125 per year for storage.
If you have a MD in your family that would open the account for you they give a discount. Our initial fee went down to $1400 and then $125 per year.
I did it because I would feel like a jerk if my child ever got any of the diseases and I could have saved her for such a small amount. It can also be used to help you, your husband and any future kids.

Yeah, they don't mention it because it's ridiculously expensive. There's an outrageous initial charge and then you have to pay a monthly rate that's at least a few hundred bucks for storage.
