Could I have broken my finger or just bruised it? Or something else?
A few days ago, I was propping open a window in my apt ( very old house, so we literally use little wooden poles to keep the windows open, as they slide up), when the pole gave way and the window slammed down on top of my hand, right across my fingers.
All four of my fingers were in pain of course, and swelled up immediately, but I could bend them all. now all of them seem to be fine and don't really hurt except for one, which is still slightly swollen and is clearly bruised. I can bend it, but there is some dull pain involved with that. It also hurts of course if pressure is applied to the top or bottom of my finger. The worst of it seems to be at the very bottom of the middle phalanx and onto the middle knuckle area.
If I gently grap the middle of my finger and push it from side to side, it makes some cracking, grinding noises like when you crack your back. It doesn't hurt at all when I do this- just wondering if that indicates anything that could be wrong with it or not.
Is it possible that it's broken? Or just bruised? I don't have health insurance so I don't want to go get x-rays unless I'm quite sure I need to. Thanks in advance for any advice.

As long as you can bend your finger, pain or no pain, your finger isn't broken. Ice your finger for 20 minutes every so often.. If the swelling doesn't go away after a week, you might need to go see a doctor. Hope that helped!!
