  • How can I teach my dog to leave our cat alone? Please help!?

We adopted a dog from a bad situation ( he was kept outside and didn't seem to have much contact with people). He's 8 years old, and overall, he's a really sweet, good natured dog who loves people. The only problem is that we have a cat who is 15. She is able to warm up to dogs, but this one doesn't seem to be working out. He will lunge at her and try to chase her in efforts to "play". She is terrified and runs and hides. We now have to separate them for a few hours a day so she can eat and use her litter box. It's just a mess. Whenever he goes after her, we firmly tell him to " leave it". If he continues, we put him in a separate room for a little while as a punishment, but he doesn't seem to be catching on to leave her alone. Is it possible to teach this dog to leave the cat alone? Any ways I could discipline him better? Or is it possible he will never be able to learn that? Any advice is welcome. We really want to keep him, but we can't have our cat stressed out like this. Thanks in advance.

  • Could I have broken my finger or just bruised it? Or something else?

A few days ago, I was propping open a window in my apt ( very old house, so we literally use little wooden poles to keep the windows open, as they slide up), when the pole gave way and the window slammed down on top of my hand, right across my fingers.

All four of my fingers were in pain of course, and swelled up immediately, but I could bend them all. now all of them seem to be fine and don't really hurt except for one, which is still slightly swollen and is clearly bruised. I can bend it, but there is some dull pain involved with that. It also hurts of course if pressure is applied to the top or bottom of my finger. The worst of it seems to be at the very bottom of the middle phalanx and onto the middle knuckle area.

If I gently grap the middle of my finger and push it from side to side, it makes some cracking, grinding noises like when you crack your back. It doesn't hurt at all when I do this- just wondering if that indicates anything that could be wrong with it or not.

Is it possible that it's broken? Or just bruised? I don't have health insurance so I don't want to go get x-rays unless I'm quite sure I need to. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Was this legal- police officer took cover off of my car without me present?

I live in an apartment building that has street-side parking just outside. The other day when I went to get into my car, I noticed a card stuck on the windshield. It turned out to be an patrolman's card from the city police, and written on it was a request for me to call the officer asao "in regards to my vehicle".

I called right away but the officer in question wasn't there. Later on I was heading back into my apartment when my neighbor told me that earlier that day, a police officer was looking at my car, and actually removed the leather cover I have on the front end of it, and was looking at the underneath. They put the cover back on, and must have left the card on my windshield then.

I still haven't been able to get a hold of this officer, but I'm pretty disturbed that they took it upon themselves to remove the cover from my car without even trying to contact me or ask me about whatever they wanted to know first. Is this legal? I doubt there is much I could do either way, but I'm mostly just curious as to whether or not this person crossed the line. Thanks in advance.

  • Anyone know anything about this antique epergne? (pic)?

I recently acquired an antique, silver-plated epergne. And am wondering if anyone can help me find any information about it's history and value. I've looked all over the internet but can't seem to find anything like it.

It has five arms and the cups, which look like they are meant to hold flowers, are tulip-shaped. The maker's mark on the bottom indicates it was crafted by Israel Freeman & Son in England. The bottom is where it also says it is silver-plated. The insides of the cups appear to be some kind of copper or brass- which is what I assume the whole piece is made of. It's a bit tarished, which is why it appears to have a gunmetal patina. Just needs to be shined up :) Here's the pic: http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w123/snow2droog...

  • Good job to get while pursuing a degree in nutrition?

I'm currently pursuing dual degrees in nutrition and anthropology. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what kinds of part time jobs I might be able to look for to have while I'm working on my degrees. I want to get a little experience in my field while I'm still in school. Anyone know of anything I should look into? (Jobs, organizations to be involved with, work for, ect.)

  • Anyone know of good brands of organic cheese?

I'm trying to find brands of cheese I could find at most grocerie stores that is made with organic milk. I'd really like to find an organic brand that also makes a variety of different kinds of cheese- monterey jack, colby, cheddar, ect. If you could give me average prices too, that'd be great. Thanks in advance!

  • Anyone had any problems with Hawaiian Tropic tanning sunscreen?

I bought a bottle of Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Suncreen SPF 4 and used it for two days in a row to lay out. I've noticed since then that my complexion is really "off". It just doesn't look right or feel good- I have some weird little bumps on my cheek by my jaw and above my lip. I never breakout and my skin as never looked or felt this way. Has anyone had similar reactions to this lotion?? It's the only thing I could think of that would make my skin react badly. Just wondering if anyone else had these problems. Thanks in advance.

  • Do you think everyone is motivated by selfishness?

Just seeing what other people think...

Do you think it's true that no matter who you are, all of your actions and emotions are, at the root of things, motivated by selfishness? Why or why not?

  • What could be wrong with my car? Burning rubber smell and smoke?

Today I was driving to a friend's when I noticed the faint smell of burning rubber, which went away so I assumed it was coming from somewhere outside. Later as I was driving, smoke started coming out of the hood ( i think) of the car, the burning rubber smell was really strong, and the steering wheel was shaking. It still starts and the brakes are good as far as I can tell. When the car is just sitting idle, nothing happens, but once I get driving, it starts smoking, shaking, and smelling of burnt rubber. What could the problem be? How much do think I would have to spend to repair it? Thanks in advance

  • Anyone have any really good biscotti recipes I can try?

I made a batch of chocolate chip biscotti from the Joy of Cooking, and they turned out pretty well, but to me, they taste a little bit too much like a regular old chocolate chip cookie that's extra hard. I'm looking for a recipe that's fairly healthy and not too sweet, but with deep vanilla or almond flavors. I'd really like a lemon poppyseed recipe if possible. Anyone have any good ones? Thanks in advance :)

  • How do I get the cigarette smoke smell out of this room?? HELP!?

I have had an unwanted house-guest for a little over a month now who insisted on smoking indoors. I figured it wouldn't be a big deal if I just had them open the window, but now that they've left and I've cleaned, I'm finding that the terrible cigarette smell is lingering in the room they stayed in.

The floors in the room are hardwood, but I have two pieces of furniture and some decorative pillows in there that I think trapped the smell. I can't afford to have anything cleaned professionally right now, so does anyone know of anything I could do to help get rid of this smell? Febreeze? Home remedies? Anything? I can't stand it! Thanks in advance.

  • What colors would go well in this room?

I recently painted my bedroom a dark purple color, pretty much exactly like the number 1 swath of the "violets" in this color wheel: http://www.malanenewman.com/images/colorwheel_brow...

The trim in the room is white, and the floors are a medium colored hardwood. What colors would go well for bedding, curtains, or a rug?? The only colors I don't want to use are light pinks and purples. The room can't be too out-rightly girly. Haha. Thanks in advance.

  • Dreams about black widow spiders?

In the past month or so, I've had about 4-5 dreams about black widows. The dreams are all different, but the concept is pretty much the same- There are black widows in my apartment and I'm really worried about them biting me. One ends up landing on my hand and no matter how hard I shake my hand it won't come off. What could this mean??

I'm just wondering if this happened to anyone else and why? Does it have to do with loggin in from my phone? Thanks

  • Is there a way to expedite a consumer complaint filed in PA?

I'm in PA and filed a consumer complaint with the attorney general's office about my bank. I talked to the receptionist there and she said complaints take about 4-6 weeks to process. Does anyone know if there is something I can do to speed this up?

I remember a few years ago I had to have my car's title processed through some office in Harrisburg because it was a salvage vehicle I bought from another state- and I was told I could talk to my local representative to help speed the process up... is there anything like that I can do in this situation? Thanks in advance

  • Is it legal for a bank to take money from my mom and dad's account to cover a negative balance on mine>?

Long story very short, my bank implemented overdraft protection on my account without my knowledge or consent, and because of that, and the fact that my online statement was wrong, I ended up spending money that wasn't there and racking up over $400 in overdraft fees.

I've been trying to figure out if I can take legal action or if I could come up with the money somehow, but in the meantime this happened: My mom is on my account with me. She also has another account with that bank, and my dad is on that account with her. Today, without any warning, letter, or phone call, the bank wiped out her savings and checkings from her and my dad's account to cover some of my negative balance, and then sent my balance to collections.

Is it legal for them to take her money from another account like that, without even telling her?? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Is it legal to rent out an apartment with black mold in it?

I've lived in this apartment for a little over a year, and there was some black mold in the bathroom on the wall when we moved in. I had no idea how bad black mold was until just recently. There isn't a whole lot of it, but there is some growing on the ceiling above the shower now, and there is a little bit in our kitchen cabinets that is starting to peak through some paint.

We contacted the previous tenant and she confirmed there was black mold in the bathroom when she lived here, and when she pointed it out to the landlord, he said that, "It wasn't anything to worry about" and he just painted over it.

I have been feeling miserable for a while and I think it's because of this mold. We are stuck in a lease here until May, but we are trying to find a way to break it and move elsewhere because we both feel terrible all the time and I don't feel safe here. Was it legal for our landlord to rent out this apartment knowing about the mold and just painting over it? What should I do to get out of my lease? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks
