Why does my cat smell awful and drag her bottom on the floor?

Update:

She is fixed and I keep her litter box clean.

Your cat probably has full anal glands.

If you look at the anus like the face of a clock, the anal glands will sit inside the rectum at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions.

These glands contain viscous fluid that is heavily scented (think skunk). This fluid normally expresses every time the cat defecates. It scent marks the feces which helps identify territory.

Sometimes this fluid can become thickened and fail to express when the cat defecates. The anal glands begin to fill and swell, becoming uncomfortable to downright painful depending on how full they are. Cats (and dogs) will scoot on the floor to try to relieve the pressure. Infection can set in very easily. If an anal gland becomes infected, it can rupture, leaving a gaping hole next to the cat's anus. This requires cleaning and flushing by a vet. Antibiotics will also have to be given.

I have also seen long haired cats (and dogs) with mats around the anus so bad that the feces could not exit the anus.

Take the cat to the vet. The vet can express the anal glands and determine if there is anything else wrong.

Maybe a call to vet's office will help sort this out? Our vet's office assistant is very helpful on the phone and solves many questions. She'll also know if a visit sounds necessary, and what questions to ask.

    Best luck!

When she drags her bottom, she is wiping her *** on the floor. Sorry.

You might need to describe the smell a little better. It could be a medical issue, but she probably needs her litterbox changed more often.

    Could be many reasons:

    She farted

    She's constipated

    She has worms

She just used the litter box

mine used to do that a lot, he'd get poo stuck to his butt, and used the carpet to wipe it off, if she's long haired you may need to take her for a trim, thats what we had to do
