Do you have to defrost frozen onions before using them?
Do you have to defrost frozen onions before using them. I am making potato salad and wanted to try out the store bought frozen onions. Should I defrost them before use or will they defrost when added to the other ingredients?

I'm not sure I would use frozen onions in a potato salad. When left to thaw on their own, they can lose their crispness and crunch.
I mainly use the frozen onions in hot dishes, in which case I just dump them right from the freezer bag into the pan and saute them a little bit.

Frozen onions will defrost on their own but are best when used in a recipe that requires cooking. They get limp if you defrost and use raw.

in general with pies, you can prepare it ahead and freeze it uncooked. then similar to if you bought a frozen pie at the store, pull it out (defrost, and since its meat [ meats should never be left out at room temp over two hours] make sure you defrost in the fridge!) and then bake. just an edit: i would freeze the pies uncooked defrost bake and then eat. when putting meat in a pie i usually cook the meat before adding to the pie. if you really have the time next time your in the grocery store go to the frozen food section and find pot pies like marie callenders and see what their instructions are to see if defrosting isne cessaryy

No, they should be ok. They're not meat, so you don't have to be anywhere near so careful. I would reccommend doing it, but you can defrost them in a way like put them in some warm (not boiling) water, or something like that

Since your using them raw, I would defrost them beforehand and let the excess water from the ice crystals drain in a colander or sieve.
If you were sauteing them for a sauce or something, I wouldn't bother.
