What does a host couple do for a wedding?

I've always seen a Mr. and a Mrs. listed as a "host couple" at many of the weddings I have attended; or have several host couples.

What exactly do the "host couple" do?

Update:

Anything else they may do?

Just because at the last wedding I went to, I know for a fact that the two host couples did not pay for anything at the wedding.

They do nothing - it's a way that the bride throws a bone to a friend or relative who she doesn't want standing up in the wedding.

The hosts are supposed to pay for the wedding. Or at least contribute a substantial amount of money. They also welcome the guests and give a speech of some sort. Whatever wedding you went to where the hosts did not pay for anything at the wedding is definitely wrong, they shouldn't have taken credit for hosting the wedding without contributing money.

The host is usually the ones putting on the wedding and then the bride and groom are the "guests of honor".

    Good luck.

It means they're hosting the event for the bride and groom. It both means they paid for the wedding and that they're in charge.
