Cat Food Portion Control- Ideal Serving Size?
I am the owner of two young male cats, brothers around 3 years old. They were adopted in May 2010, and were overweight. The short haired one weighed 17lbs, and the long hair weighed 15lbs. Over several months they have lost weight, and are currently around 12 lbs or 12 1/2 lbs each. They show nice waist definition and the ribs are palpable to the touch, but not protruding. Both cats look good at 12 lbs- they are long and sturdy, muscular but definitely don't look fat anymore. They are fed 1/4 can each of wet food in the morning (1 can is 5.5 ounces) and 1/4 cup of dry food at night.
However, they have started strongly begging for food, and I am worried I am not feeding them enough. Both cats are energetic, but the long haired, smaller one is very, very active, very athletic. He in particular seems to be trying to forage for food, digging in the trash can, taking out old cat food cans and chewing the metal rim, trying to get into the sink or whatever I'm doing while cooking. Based on this, what kind of portions should I be giving them? Should I increase their food, and if so, by how much?

Maybe add in a mid day snack if you can or definitely increase the amount of dry you are feeding. The wet food will digest quicker then the dry, therefore they will be hungry sooner. Maybe give them a 1/4 cup of dry in the morning and do the wet in the middle of the day. My Chester is generally a large cat, 15lbs, he get a 1/4 cup of his dry food twice a day and sometimes get a mid day canned snack. The kind of food you feed can affect them being hungry too. Chester is eating right now the Nutro Max Cat Weight Management. He doesn't beg during the day in between feedings. The ingredients don't contain Chicken-by-Products or Ground Yellow Corn like other premium brands may have. Those ingredients can be harder to digest and don't stick with them as well as other ingredients will so be sure you read your ingredients.

The first thing is that you need to find confidence within yourself and realize that no one is PERFECT! That you are beautiful now and there is no need to compare yourself to others. 2nd Late night cravings happen to all of us and can be created by a number of things: Not eating enough PMS Stress Depression Lack of sleep Boredom You have control of what you eat if you want it. Even when you feel like you dont. When you get home dont head to the kitchen. If you are in there. Drink a huge glass of water until you feel really full. Then see if you even want to try to eat anything else. You probably wont and then head to bed or out of the kitchen. Its all mental. And you have the choice to outwit yourself. Dont give in to temptation. And if you do grab a healthy snack!! And fill up on that. And another thing. It is ok to be hungry and have hunger pains. It doesnt mean that you have to stuff you face. Go to sleep and the next day you wont feel so bad about eating the night before. You should be consuming 1857 calories a day to maintain the weight you are currently at. So if you break that down that would be: Breakfast you would consume 485 calories Snack you would consume 200 calories Lunch you would consume 485 calories Snack you would consume 200 calories Dinner you would consume 485 calories Dont eat after 7pm-- Drink that water and go to bed!! Hope this helps!!

It does sound like your cats are hungry and need an increase in food! I suggest following the manufactures feeding guidelines or your best bet would be to get them checked out at your Vet. I have had 2 cats that were hyperthyroid and were always hungry until diagnosed properly and treated. Please get them checked out at the Vet soon so they will be happy and healthy!
